Its like cryptic clues in the Times crossword.  You don't start at the beginning:

    I drink but do not eat,

tells me that it involves a fluid, but not a solid

    Sleeping by day, rising by night

says it is something that happens at night

    Of man-made work am I,

says it is something made (obviously), and we're running out of things it can be now

    A home to the son of the sun,

and this line clearly indicates light or heat.

After that I think its pretty obvious to anyone, isn't it?

I hate cryptic crossword clues. They're just smug for smug people who like to feel superior and go "well of course you take the first letter of that word" why?!" Why you twit*?! Why should we be forced to take the first letter of that word? You're speaking as if there's this whiole set of rules you need to know to understand these so called cryptic clues which means you're a nasty smug git who never shares these rules with others but sniggers about how superior you are with your secret knowledge. Just piss off and stop being stupid and exclusive you sod!

So yes, I hate that whole smug selfish supriority complex thing.

Okay guys, I'm going to have a bath now and then I'll be getting a 1000 point Khadoran army ready for this  evening's slaughterfest. Basicaly I'll be gone 'till around midnight although I might find time to post something before I leave. Thanks for the riddle Keeper I thought that was what it was, but wasn't a 100% sure. that combined with the fact that Aurum (8 Int) never would have figured it out anyway made me just stay quiet.

Raul is not higely intelligent, either, but I always thought that riddles were something put up for players to solve.  It never helps if your character has got INT18, but you can't solve the riddle, anyway :)

That is a good point, next time I will post my thoughts here in the OOC thread and we can just have one of the 'smarter' PC's say it in game.

Well in it's original form the riddle is not a puzzle at all (that is a meaning imposed upon it by later scholars). The riddle is the art of describing a thing in intimate detail, in such a way that anyone can tell what it is, without actualy saying it. So the best riddles are obvious but long because there's los of ways to describe it. If a riddle is short then it's a bad riddle because the person who constructed it wasn't imaginative enough to make it longer :).
