No horizontal alignment (although the given solution includes one blatant vertical alignment which is only possible if the silver one (start button) doesn't count because it's only kith (general species) relation to the other hand buttons rather than being kin (direct family relation).

That's what I found seriously dodgey in the wording. That's just being so picky as to be very close to torture. However if I move that button to a different position on it's current bearing (the opposite end of a row) then it doesn't line up with any of the others and everything is fine.

That's why I said it looked like an impossible solution, one of the correct buttons was directly touching the start button.

Yep, real life comes first (especialy if it's an emergency or family stuff). There's a few things you can afford to put off but there's some things you just shouldn't (because they really matter).

With the box, since there's no penalty for getting it wrong, we could just trial and error it.  We have the starting key and two others that are right, and that a wrong key makes them all pop up.  We could have the solution in a few minutes simply by pressing down the silver and followed by another button and marking which don't make it pop up.  Bit of a cheap trick, but considering you've told us the puzzle as good as cheats, I'd say that's perfectly inkeeping for my wise, logical dwarf ;)

That makes sense, but ...

My rusty maths tells me that there are probably something in the order of 350 routes to be taken (excluding an average rate of hitting false paths).  I'd rather find someone to interrogate before they expire.  We can always come back.  And besides ... once we get downstairs Raul can share the info about the gems that the thief wants to nick ... :D

Understandable. I covered everything Aurum would do in my post. He wouldn't care for the books so after his searches he will just stand guard while the group does all the scholarly work.

Yep, there's a broken amulet and some dead bodies :).

Oh, and he could unbar the door if he wanted to too since the bolt is on this side after all :).

I will leave it until the party is ready to move on. don't want anyone creaping up on us. This way there is only one door to watch. We need to check downstairs once the abbot is ok.
