Prepare to enter Deathtrap Dungeon

Sarian thinks he can hear a voice behind the door whimpering or groaning quietly. Whilst he ponders this Dekion advances up the corridor and fires a bolt down the sewer pipe. It glances off the side in the darkness and eventualy lands. Nothing seems to respond.

"Guys, be still a second, there is something behind the door." Once Dekion and Rhana seam to have my attention, I'll open the door and take a step back.

As Sarian steps back, Dekion step up and takes a look in. He has both his shield and scimitar in defensive positions.

Beyond the door Dekion spies a man in tattered clothing chained to the wall by his left wrist. His right hand is missing and the poorly bandaged stump indicates that it is his hand that is nailed to the door. Pleading for mercy he cowers back as far away as the chain will allow.

Interesting fact: the illustration bears a remarkable resemblence to the adventure's original author.

"Have a care, whoever steps in there first, but we should try and talk with this wretch, I think."

"Who are you!" Serian sais with authority

The man cowers and cringes and pleads for his freedom.

I'm not going to call him Liam because it's a rubbish* name. He didn't have a name in the original adventure and only got called Liam of Guilford in the d20 version (residents of Guildford have the right to feel offended by the suggestion that they might be mostly called Liam).

I'll come up with a name for him in a bit if need be.

"Sarian can you open the lock on the chain or do I have to just hack through it with the Axe?" Dekion takes a second to look around the room and see if there is anything else of interest.

Dekion puts away his scimitar and takes out the barbarians mighty battle axe. "So can you open it or will you hold him still so I can have at the chain?"

The man cringes back, clearly worried at the prospect of losing another extremity.

"Don't worry friend, we mean you no harm. I just want to free you" Dekion takes a second and looks around the room to see if there is anything interesting.

Okay I'm going to three day rule it and have Sarian have a go at the lock on the shackle. He rolls a 28 and skillfully picks the lock without the prisoner suffering any further loss of limb.

The pittiable wretch drops to his knees and grovels, loudly professing his thanks over and over again. Eventualy he is able to tell you all that he entered Deathtrap Dungeon four years ago, hoping to make his fortune. Unfortunately he fell down a pit trap (which you have already encountered) and had to be rescued by one of the Trialmasters - Baron Sukumvit's dungeon administrators. He was given a choice between death or service in the dungeon as the trialmaster's minion. Since he did not wish to perish he began the unpleasant life of a slave. Recently he made a bid for freedom but was captured by some wandering orc guards. To punish him the orcs hacked off his right hand and imprisoned him in the cell, nailing his severed hand to the door as a warning to others who would defy the trialmasters.

He doesn't know much that would be of any use to you other than the fact that he knows you'll need to gather gems and precious stones to get out and that there are three trialmasters.

Once he's told you all that he dashes out of the cell and down the tunnel to the guard room where Dekion slew two goblins (clearly intent on making one last desparate bid for freedom).

"Three trialmasters, eh?  Well, lets see if those stupid orcs left anything of use in this room.  Otherwise, we could rest up in here, if you guys think that is a good idea?"

Well there's a bucket that serves as a chamber pot but that's about it really.

"So there are three trialmaster. I made it past one." Dekion looks at his ring. Do you think we should rest up here then? We can close the door and try to get ourselves together."
