With a bolt of realisation, Gaius shouts to his comrades

" Brothers, its possible the altar is the cause of this enchantment! Lunk, come with me, i need your help. "

"Olothros, Will, can you keep these people at bay without killing them? they must be under the influence of some fell magic"

Gaius moves to Lunk to try to get him to follow him to the altar.

Lunk raises his ichor besmirched ax menacingly at the crowd and growls, "back off!" while stomping over toward Gaius

ooc:  crud, don't have my character sheet handy...  here's my raw d20 roll for intimidate if necessary:  1d20=9

Will jumps out and fires an arrow at the crowd (trying to miss) and shouts: "U...u...up your's titfaces!!"
Then he prepares to run for it hoping that some of the crowd will follow him instead of Lunk and Gaius.
He's hoping that they'll stop following him once the altar is broken.

OOC: I've kind of lost track of the battle map. He first ran as far FROM the crowd as he could get, then jumps out and looses an arrow (probably to far away for it to even reach the crowd). I'm unsure where on the map that would land him

He wants the two of us to hold all of them back? thats not going to work! "Why don't the four of us make a run for it and have the Giant Fire Beetle cover our retreat?"

What was the Giant Fire Beetle doing anyway?

It moved towards Lunk like you told it to.

The beetle waddles quickly over to join Lunk. Having a glowing giant beetle run up to one is enough to weird out most people; your opponents quail in fear.

Will shoots an arrow over their heads and they start in alarm.

You all do a lot of shouting as this carries on.

What a mess! "Gaius lets all go. I doubt just the two of us will be able to hold a greoup this large. We can use the Beetle to cover our escape. I'd like to see what they are going to do anyway.

Asacimov! Olothros is right. The beetle will hold them at bay... i hope

Giaus tries to get them moving with some semblence of order to run in the right direction of the altar.

I have a bad feeling about this

Since it seems as if everybody is running, and since this was Wills original intent, he'll just run along with the rest then...

"Oi, Gaius, where ya goin?"  shouts Lunk, as he turns and tries to catch up with the party.

As the inmates and associates are distracted by the charge of the celestial beetle, Lunk legs it and easily catches up with his friends with a speed born of the wild. Our merry band of misfits are able to get a good head start on their opponents. The beetle doesn't hang around for long, disappearing in an awe-inspiring flash when the spell expires. Of course, the four cannot see this as they hotfoot it back to the temple, their breath fogging in front of them as they huff and puff to get there.

Once there, all is as they left it. The crystalline altar that has enslaved the minds of the innocent people of the asylum and the two men you were sent to find glints in the shafts of light that penetrate the temple.

"Lunk! You have to destroy this! Use the skills nature blessed you with and smash this altar. "
Gaius turns to olothros.

"Brother mage, can you cast something suitably destructive to remove this abomination? We have to free those people from the evil possession  of those... things"

Gaius is unsure if his feeble efforts with his quarterstaff will amount to much, but will have a crack at swinging at the altar.

He's at it again the babbling god monger... All words and no brains

Will, uneasy about the mindaltering effects of the altar, stays well away from it and watches the others efforts. He'll stand as far away from it as possible while still seeing it.

"I don't have much left that will be of use for destroying the altar. I can try and use an acid spell." He turns and looks to Will. "Please see if you can block the door. We don't need anyone barging in on us." He then begins casting acid splash and tries to center it on the altar.

"Uh oh"
Will, having forgotten about the crowd that was after them, tries to sidle along the wall and place himself as far away from the door as from the altar. All the time trying to look as if this was a perfectly natural everyday action, afraid.. who me? Certainly NOT! kind of thing.
He aims his bow at the door though.

Indeed Gaius' efforts are for naught as he strikes the altar, and his quarterstaff snaps in half!
