Mr Teufel

Being a druid I'll probably have a higher charisma, but being a ranty religious type my character might not have the patience to give that sort of support. We also have to work on why our mob are willing to travel together. Since two of us have Rogue backgrounds we might have grown up in the same place?

Keeper

Subject to Balgin's approval, of course: I was thinking that one of my fighter levels and two rogue levels might have come from getting involved as a heavy in a criminal gang as a youngster, and then a second fighter level from some kind of compulsory military service given to me as punishment when I was caught.  Of course, now, I've straightened out ... mostly.

 Dunno, too cheesy?  What do you think?
:hal:

Alex

Well, I don't mind really who it is; I could see my guy getting a bit tiresome for those who aren't used to him, so someone with a bit of common sense and patience is what I had in mind. He'd have very little common sense himself, so he kinda needs someone to point him in the right direction, if you know what I mean. A bit like Wallace needs Gromit.

Maybe your rogue characters were part of a street gang or something but went your separate ways, only to meet up later, by which time one of you had 'acquired' my character, having seen the usefulness of having him around. I don't mind my guy being mildly taken advantage of- he's not the sort to notice whether he's being short-changed when the loot's being divvied up, as long as you keep him supplied with paper, pens and, of course, raw materials for his experiments.

Anyway, I really should get back to my books- I'll chip in later when I'm having my next tea-break.

Edit- Keeper's guy could've been conscripted but Teufel's managed to avoid arrest and fled to sea/ an isolated patch of coastline where he had a conversion experience?

Mr Teufel

I like the idea in your edit. I suppose a mage would be considered useful enough in general to accept some eccentricity, and attempt to curb the rest. Especially if we have a known goal that needs us to stay together.

Keeper

Sounds fine to me :D  :occasion14:

Yeah, I suppose we sort of need Balgin's input to give us an idea of where the initial plot hook is coming from- if we've all bumped into each other at a convenient inn or we've been together for a while, that sort of thing.

Let's say that Keeper's character came across mine during his time in the service- my character, Panorrecci (he's a gnome, there are plenty more where that came from), was incarcerated in some keep he was besieging. Maybe they were trying to force him into designing WMDs, or whatever. Keeper's dude is the first through the door into the lab, and manages to convince Panorrecci to turn against his 'captors' (he hadn't really noticed he was imprisoned, just that the man who had been bothering him regularly was more than a little rude.)

After that, Panorrecci starts tagging along with [Keeper], who's managed to keep him mostly out of trouble, saving his life on more than one occasion. In return, the spells and gismo's that Panorrecci is constantly working on have proven very useful. It was at [Keeper's] suggestion that Panorrecci came up with the large backpack contraption (the patent-pending Panorrecci original spellcaster's EZ-reach equipment holder with built-in adventuring gear storage and retrieval apparatus) that he constantly wears, giving him easy access to his gadgets (spell components) though, like all of Panorrecci's posessions, it bears little resemblance to its original form.

When [Keeper] is discharged from the service, Panorrecci follows his friend into civilian life, where they soon come across [Teufel] and take up the adventuring life as a way of making money (or field-testing new ideas)

Of course, I don't want to take the fun of backstory writing from you, so feel free to modify this to fit your own ideas and whatnot!  :occasion14:

The church of Theydori want to hire a group of someone's to escort a scholar (could be a pc) to study some interesting artrifacts they've discovered at an archeological dig out on one of the little islands in the inland sea (only recently discovered despite being deceptively close to the mainland).

There's a lot more to it than that but that's the gist of it.

QuoteBalgin, how does the point buy system your using work? I take it we're starting at 8. Is it a straight buy or do higher scores cost more points? I'm interested in putting my guy's intelligence through the roof (20+) at the expense of Wis and Cha.

Okay people, so the six ability scores: Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Dexterity, Constitution & Charisma.

Let's keep everyone on an even footing here and go with a points buy type option.

All start at 8 (but can go lower if you want) then take another 30 build points (because I'm generous) to add on top. Remember, however, that a 15 or 16 costs 2 build points, a 17 costs 3

So an ability score of the following costs the indicated ammount of build points:

8:0
9:1
10:2
11:3
12:4
13:5
14:6
15: 8
16:10
17:13
18:16

I'd like to point out that if you spread them evenly you'll get a massive 13 in every ability score but that that wouldn't lead to a very interesting character.

For our two new players I'd like to define the ability scores

Strength: The ability to lift, shove, carry... Not so much big muscles as knowing how to use them (like understanding things like points of balance and the best ways to carry things).

Intelligence: Academic intelligence, puzzle solving, intellectual thinking.

Wisdom: Common sense, intuitive thinking.

Dexterity: Coordination, balance "skill".

Constitution: Toughness, health.

Charisma: The power of personality, influenced by but by no means dependant upon appearance, used both to influence people in a positive way and a negative (such as intimidation, bullying etc).
If anyone wants any help getting their ability scores sorted out then please Pm me.

Is there a reason you're not using the standard stat order of : Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, Cha,?

A first draft of my character's stats:
Str 12
Dex 14
Con 10
Int 10
Wis 16 (15+1*)
Cha 14

*1 gained at fourth level.

He's probably Rogue 1/Druid 3.

Yep, I've played 1st Edition a lot (couldn't afford the expensive new 2nd ed books) so the standard order is Strength, Intelligence, Wisdom, Constitution and Charisma.

Oddly enough, when thhe ability scores are in that order people don't prioritise strength, dexterity and constitution and treat the others like "dump stats" quite so much as when it's so blatantly separated the 2nd Ed way.

Mr Teufel

We are playing 3.5 tho, aren't we? It's the only one I'm really familiar with. If we're going to use another version, I'll have to bow out.

Don't worry about it mate.

Fabian

First draft of my chap's stats -

Str 14
Dex 14
Con 10
Int 12
Wis 12
Cha 15 +1 (4th Level) = 16

definitely Bard 1/Fighter 1 and umming and ahing over Barbarian (fey battle trance), Ranger (come to me jungle friends!) or Rogue (it's sneak attack city!)
The questions we should be asking are these:
Does it have dungeons?
Does it have dragons?
Does it have transients who kill things for money?  Do you roll a d20?

Keeper

Well, I did sent my stats privately via PM, but since other people are posting their stats here:

Name: Filibèrto Carlos Pofolupé Raul Eissej Alfonso di Ian?r (known as Raul)
Race: Human
Ability Scores (@ level 1:creation):
  STR  16  (10 points)
  DEX  17  (13 points)
  CON  10  (2 points)
  INT  10  (2 points)
  WIS  8  (0 points)
  CHA  11  (3 points)

At 4th level, the point will almost certainly being going into DEX.  And Ftr2/Rge2, like I've already said.

Fabian

Jeepers! He'll be a bit good in combat then!  :icon_w00t: Is he a duellist type with that Dex and the name?  :icon_razz:
