Huh. Didn't realise they were overpowered - forgot to add the hit dice to the adjustment. If Balgin has Savage Species he could use the Centaur Monster Class, and give Custom Hobby just 4 levels of Centaur.( p161).

I have to say I would be uncomfortable with an overpowered party member.

They do look incredibly fun though - you could just gain xp a little slower and I wouldn't mind too much to be honest, though it might be a bit tough for Balgin making encounters that challenge you and aren't lethal to the rest of us.

There's actualy a set encounter in the adventure where a nonhumanoid creature would be seriously screwed over. "Jump in and save him with your huge stats" "but I lack the requisite anatomy for the task". (No, not that, something a centaur would find incredibly difficult to do given the circumstances). I won't say more as I really don't want to spoil it for you guys.

So anyway, what did you fancy playing Rod?

Like on the other topic, a dwarven Esmian cleric, probably of the Relenting Hand order.  I'll write some stuff up tonight and get back to you tomorrow  :icon_wink:

Sounds like we are moving forward well enough.

Well, I'm not sure how Savage Species works, but you could start the centaur off with 2 monstrous human HD+2ECL, then require it to take another per level until you had all 4, then start taking class levels. Might not be much fun, not having many special abilities, but on the other hand, I'm sure Ivor could come up with some sort of interesting saddle thing...

If you wanted something slightly less powerful, but still four-legged, I'm sure I saw some sort of goat-based centaur thing somewhere- that planescape website, maybe?

Still, it's Balgin's game, so if it really won't work in the adventure, then, well, it's his call. I've no particular problems with the general concept, though.

Looking forward to having a cleric, though- makes it less of a problem when my fire thrower malfunctions and the bard-arian gets caught in the blast  :icon_twisted:

Fabian

Why are you so keen to get me caught in a fireball?  :icon_scratch: Where's the love?  :icon_tears:

And the race you're thinking of is the bariaur - very cool (Planescape is cool, Balgin  :icon_razz: ) but not very 'normal' fantasy.
The questions we should be asking are these:
Does it have dungeons?
Does it have dragons?
Does it have transients who kill things for money?  Do you roll a d20?

Not when the GM's a 14 year old druggy with a really innapropriate sense of humour (and let's face it, given the artwork, presentation and the advertising, he was blatantly their target market).

Alex

"Oops! Sorry about that- seems I miscalculated the vectors for those improvements I made to the variable output combustable liquid sprayer. Would it help if I shouted 'Duck' next time? Or the fowl of your choice for that matter, I'm really not fussy. Hmm... maybe some sort of flame-retardant body paint would come in handy for next time- I really should write that down somewhere.."

Fabian

I was none of those things and I love it. Horses for courses, eh cutter?  :icon_wink:

Is all ok with Alarian's stats etc?

@Alex - Oh sorry, my cleave slipped.  :icon_razz:

We had this planescape adventure that basicaly involved us floating about uncontrollably untill we "believed" we could walk on the ground (which did not exist in the big empty void we were flying in) and that was it. The entire adventure was one boring encounter. He didn't even use any of all that wacky screwed up looking stuff he liked the look of so much.

As I said, Torment made Planescape cool for all the people who'd been put off by the bad advertising and some of the imbeciles who played it without bothering to "know" it (as Dakon would say).

Would you like me to dig out the d20 rules for playing speaking floating half demonic skulls? I'm not kidding, my mate eventualy published the 2nd Ed version he'd written on the net and then I helped him convert it to 3rd (and it was pretty well balanced).

My character Falk the Talking Skull still exists somewhere. He was ace :).

Alarian's okay but I'm sort of wanting you to wait for the others to catch up a bit :p.

See, this is why a cleric's a good idea- we need something to stop the party self-destructing!  :occasion14:

(How much exp do I get if I 'accidentally' kill a fellow party member?)

Ahem... much fun as this is, I really should get back to ENT. If it's okay, I'll get all the character mechanics sorted out on Friday,  but if you need anything else done urgently, just make it up.

Fabian

That's cool; ah I know exactly which plane and prob which sample adventure your mate was using as I have the Planes of Chaos box set - LImbo and yes, you have to test to see if you can create air and land from the primal soup. A very tricky proposition for new players to get a handle on. ANd yes the suggested adventures are really just encounters. Good settings with some poor implementation but excellent 'fluff' writing. Anyway, yes sorry.

P.S. If his background is a bit too "Slavic fairy-tale meets King Arthur" I can re-jig it a bit.

Mr Teufel

A bad GM with no prep can ruin any gameworld. We played "The Infinite Staircase" (or my GM's version of it) and we went everywhere from an ocean fighting sahuaguin, Jangling Heightor (a hell city made of spiked chains) fighting kytons, to not/alice-in-wonderland, Pandemonium, and the temple of elemental evil. Long campaign, had an absolute blast.

OT: if we're going to be climbing shear cliffs or wriggling down tight holes a centaur is going to be a real problem.

Custom_Hobby

Just because something is hard doesn't mean it should be avoided.

But what you're suggesting is an option that makes it harder for the entire party. If it was just harder for you, it wouldn't be an issue.

Ok: For a Centaur
1) It's Custom Hobby's Forum, and we appreciate being allowed to play here
2) It's something Hobby seems to feel strongly about
3) It's fantasy, and centaurs are fantastic (technically), and yes, I think they're cool too.

Against:
1) Centaurs are overpowered compaired to the campaign's level (6 vs 4)
2) Balgin has stated that there are tasks our party may need to do that are incompatible with centaur anatomy
3) Centaurs were not mentioned in the original world description, so may have to be retconned in
4) Balgin has evidenced discomfort with the idea, and he's GM

Ok, any more for or against? Anyone see compromises?
