For love nor money part 1: Arrival in Mittleresdorf
« on: July 16, 2008, 10:21:03 AM »

Mittleresdorf is a sleepy little town nesstled in the quieter regions of Wissenland, just some distance upriver of Wissenburg itself. The town itself is fairly new, being originaly created when a group of farmers decided to gather together behind the security of stone walls and to travel out to their farmlands to work. Across the river lies a dark brooding forest and who knows what perrils may lie therein. Off to the west the grey mountains can easily be made out above the clouds.

Now it just so happens that such a quiet little town is perfect pickings for any bunch of brigands, goblins or beastmen who might choose to take their picking's of the town's produce. It also just so happens that a young bounty hunter, and his associates, have heard rumours of brigands, rogues, knaves and thugs harassing travellers near this town and have headed down that way to investigate the possibilities of gainful employment.

And so, it is late one evening that a band of weary travellers find themselves on the road outside Mittleresdorf. Up ahead the walls of the town are broken by a great gate of wood banded with iron. A smaller gate is set into one of the larger doors, clearly for admission of people after the great gates have been shut and barred for the night. Two men at arms lounge comfortably against the gateposts, cudgels hanging from their belts.

One of them waves a friendly wave and the other straightens up a bit. It's getting late and they'll probably be closing the gate soon.

Everyone may wish to make a common knowledge: the empire skill check (int) to know stuff about this area and the town.

Hi

OOC  - Balgin - can you make the Int roll for me please?

IC

Georgi offers the guard a swig from his ale skin (never trust the local water), and asks if there's any 'work' about.
(Runs his hand across the axe blade with the word 'work').

Everyone starts with 2d10gc. I hadn't got round to doing it for everyone yet. Everyone now has their starting money (with the last crown or two broken down into a realistic mix of change).

The friendly guard introduces himself as Hans, and his friend as Will. Indicating the large iron bound doors behind him with a jerk of his thumb, he explains that "we're about to close the gate, aren't we Will?"

At this Will begins pushing the great gates closed slowly (he'd probably do it faster with Hans' assistance, which he'll robably be getting soon but he's clearly doing it slowly for dramatic effect).

"Now you see," says Hans, "we need to charge an entry fee for entering out town. It's not much, just a shilling each. Maintaince of the walls and town's defences, you know what it's like."

Will grins knowingly as he continues to slowly shut the gates.

Georgie failed his int check by 2 :(.

Georgi stops for a moment, then addresses the guards,

"Of course why both be signing a receipt for taxes, when you could warm your bellies on this cold evening...."

Georgi takes a swig of spirits from a stone bottle, then passes it to the guards. His free hand gripping his axe.

"We're all friends here, not some snooty beaurocrat hiding from the cold......"

Georgi waits for an answer.

(If they move to attack then Georgi will splash Vodka into the nearest one's eyes. If not he'll spend a minute or two 'savouring'/sharing the bottle).

Kilkirrie sensing that a fight could break out, addles up to the gaurds and addresses Georgi before the gaurds. "Eeh, calm down Georgi, doesn't tha know the time honoured tradtion of the greased palm?" *
turning to hans he says " but come on, its a steep price. How about you tell me where I can find a good tavern in this town and i'll stand thee both a pint , when yer off duty. Tha won't find better offer tonight Hans, what do yer say?" Kilkirrie asks with a smile on his lips and his hand on his axe.

* It's worth remembering that warhammer dwarfs are nrotherners, they're not scotts.

So Georgi attempts to use blather (a trained skill he does not have) so we;'ll default to charm with a penalty since he hasn't got that skill either. He is, however, aided by the ahcohol so I'll say that negates his small penalty. Kilkirrie attempts to use charm.

With his 16% (I'm being kind anr rounding up) Georgi rolls a shocking 92. so he offers the guards a drink and they're not that interested, clearly seeing through his ruse. Georgi begins to suspect that the guards might not be just doing their job. In other parts of the old world this could easily be called extortion.

Unfortunately Kilkirrie desn't have charm either so his chance of success (half fellowship) is an amazingly small 10%. He rolls a 99.

I suspect that one of you may wish to use a fortune point (daily reroll) but with the odds being so small it might not be worth the waste. But it is getting on for evening so now might be a good time to blow 'em all anyway since you'll be getting them again tomorrow.

Georgi saunters forwards and offers Hans a drink. The young guard sniffs it, grimaces and declines. Clearly it's not to his taste. Grinning, Georgi agrees he'd rather have a sip of kvas inside him but in the wilderness he must make do with what he can. Will kindly informs him that he can find kvas inside, at the best inn in town, after he's paid his gate tax.

Kilkirrie, sensing danger in the air, stepes forwards asking Georgi if he hasn't heard of bribery? The guards stiffen up a bit and one asks if "you're trying to bribe us?" They do a very good job of giving an impression that to confirm that suspicion wouldn't be a very good idea.

I think I can see people spending experience on bribery and influence skills later on :p.

Gerorgi pointedly puts the stopper back in and puts the bottle back in his bag.

Absently stroking his axe Georgi pulls himself to his full height..
"So there's the little matter of the receipt - just to make sure everything's OK, of course....."

(Intimidate check).

Yon steps to the front, between Gerogi and Hans, clear now that the usual methods of avoiding "taxation" are not going to work in this case.

"Now then lads, we've all had a hard day on the road and I'm sure these gentlemen have had an equally hard day keeping a watchful eye on everyone entering and leaving Mittleresdorf.  Its a hard job isn't it, Hans? Done it mi'self as a lad, so I've got a respect for these gents."

"Now, you lads get on inside and I'll settle up this reasonable tax here."

Yon gestures the lads towards the door and reaches for his money pouch to pay the guard.  Hopefully if Georgi has passed his Intimidate he'll get a receipt.

Hargin with his hand on his axe heads in the direction that Yon gestured in. He lags slowly behind the others just in case and keeps his attention on the guards.

Gergi puts on an intimidating display, spoiled only by his words slurring ever so slightly and a swaying of bodily balance that makes him appear less sober than he is. An evil 97 was rolled for the intimidate check and the guard actualy passed his opposed willpower roll by rolling a 30 :(. Hans accepts four shillings from Yon's hand and Kilkirrie and Hargin escort the confused Kislevite (muttering rather loudly about daylight robbery) into town before the guards take exeption to his words.

"Well now," says Will, "it's good to see you've come to your sense. If you're looking for a place to stay you might want to try The Merry Halfling. It's just along the main road, on the right there. Lovely place, best food in town and the best drinks too."

The Merry Halfling is indeed about two hundred yards down the road and easy to find. Whilst the words written beneath the picture painted on the inn sign are a mystery themself, the pig picture of a happy rosey cheeked halfling with a pipe in his mouth, a mug of ale in one hand and a plate of steaming food in the other make it fairly obvious that food and drink is to be had within.

As the party progresses up the road towards the inn, Georgi casts his eyes about in frustration at feeling cheated by some local lads trying it on. Something doesn't quite feel right. Given the time of evening there's a lot of darkened windows where lamps and candles should be burning. He also begins to notice a distinct lack of people in town. The place seems to hold a lot less people than he'd expect. Kilkirrie is also beginning to notice how thinly spread the population is. Surely a town this size could hold thrice as many folk and then be full.

Perception checks:
Yon 86/35
Georgie 9/35
Hargin 80/39
Kilkirrie 10/27

Feeling the grumble in his belly Hargrin replies "I don't care what they have right now, I'm eating it."

"I dunno - summut's not right. Don't seem to be enough people about for town this size - and don't tell me they're all indoors already. Where's the lamplights in the windows"?

"Mebbe we can find out more at the inn - could do with some grub".
