This place is for pre game stuff (as the adventure/campaign is still a long way off). Basicaly it's for people to mull over (or heartedly discuss) character concepts that they'd like to try out. The best way to approach it is probably to wait a bit before coming up with an idea. There's not much worse than trying to play a character you created months ago but never got a chance to play and the idea went stale in the meantime....

But if anyone wants to discuss ideas here, or jot them down so they don't forget them, then feel free. I have a few player guidelines for this campaign with regards to character creation:

The treasure is designed for a 2nd ed party so newer classes (sorcerors and stuff) will be highly disadvantaged. Given the sheer number of spellbooks found in treasure hauls a wizard would do much better. There's a lot of clerical items as well.

I'd recommend a "balanced" party of characters (you know, fighter, cleric, magic user & thief). I'm not demanding any particular classes be present but for the very last section you guys will need to be able to pump out both arcane and divine spells of at least four spell schools so spellcasters and specialists would be handy. The available henchmen/companions are mostly fighter types so you could possibly get by without warrior types in the party so long as you were really careful in the early sections of the game.

Some of the encounters are of the 1st ed/early 2nd ed scale (you know the ones, those "440 goblins plus some goblin characters" type of encounters) so either diplomacy or a "landscape gardener" wizard (who turns the opposing hordes into a glossy sheen on the landscape which has large burn marks and impact craters all over it) would come in handy. It's not designed for you to fight everything (although that is almost possible).

So basicaly think of an adventuring party who can work well together and cover most situations and you guys should be okay.

I don't have any confirmed players yet but I'd like to offer invitations to people who have a large board presence since this campaign is likely to be quite long term. Unlike Deathtrap Dungeon or Dark Awakenings this adventure has plenty of opportunities for other characters to join in part way through.

I am interested and amthinking of some sort of Mage or going with a Knight. I have not played a Knight yet so it might be fun.

1.

And why would you want to play a ghost?

Become one later, its more fun that way!

He's not kidding. One time when I played this a warrior monk decided to attack some trolls. The trolsl were in a narrow tunnel leading to a pit and the trolls played their favourite game. The game called "grab someone & pass them down the line an' chuck them in the pit".

Unfortunately the lead troll ripped the guy's leg off before passing him down the line. He just grabbed his body in one hand, his leg in the other and twisted and pulled really hard.

That's one fifth level character who took early retirement.

That could be cool

why a ghost? lets see:

they can be combined with other races to get their abilities as well
they turn all HD you have and will get to d12
fly 30ft with perfect menouverability
manifest to etherial at will
manifested means only incorperal creatures, spells or magic weapons can touch me, with a 50% miss chance
they get one to three ghost special abilities, which one is take over other people's bodies
telekinesis
a d20+HD DC 16 check to regenerate after dying in 2d4 days
+4 vs turning (they are undead)
no constitution, charisma +4
+8 to hide, listen search and spot

and apart from it's in game abilities, it could be a really cool character to RP, with a ritch background and gives the GM chances to have a sub plot missions.

and I like ghosts  :icon_suspicious:

And then your ghost walks into town and all the local clergy and witch hunters get on his arse just for being there. I'd rather have players play "socialy acceptable" characters for now since I'll be having enough trouble running the adventure as is (plus converting it all over from 2nd edition rules) without having to take too much care of other things as well (although other stuff might be useful to give me time to stat stuff up).

I think I mentioned elsewhere that I'd rather see people playing PHB races & classes to begin with but other stuff is negotiable (for instance the hold the line feat from the complete warrior is awesome). If you just want to play a ghost for the rules (and some stat bonuses) then that's the wrong reason. If you really like something then that's a good enough reason to try and make it rules friendly. Currently I could see a ghost character being more trouble than it's worth 'though.

Chrysalis

I have never played 2nd edition nor do I have the books. Other wise, I would gladly have joined... :icon_neutral:

Chrysalis - it's 3E - Balgy's updating it. You can still play!
The questions we should be asking are these:
Does it have dungeons?
Does it have dragons?
Does it have transients who kill things for money?  Do you roll a d20?

eyeolas

ok, I'll re think

Oh, Balgin, with your battle maps, once you've made them on paint, how do you get them onto the site?

Eyeolas all moderator can upload images direcrtly to the forum. In the reply window if you look at the bottom of the page you will see alink that says "Additional Options." click on that and you will see more features pop up at the bottom. Then just click "Browse" next to the "Attach" window and upload theimage. Click post and you are finished.

I've already updated all the npc's for about a third of it so to begin with it'll flow pretty steadily.

Eyeolas: with regards to battle maps always keep a blank version (that is, a map with no creatures on it). That way you can just drop them on instead of dragging them about and then trying to fill in the empty gaps where they stood for every update.

Chrysalis

I'll see if I can gather my thought to find a cool character concept  :icon_scratch:
