Model Ships

Just found this place, http://www.netmerchants.co.uk  They stock all sorts of stuff.

I ordered the rackham paints from here but they have a £5 min order so had to get 2 paints and 4 packs of cork boulders.  I looked at their model ships and was amazed at what they have

does anyone know the scale that 28mm use?  is it 1\72?

Cant beleive I've never seen it b4.  They do loads of stuff.  I think 1/72 is too small so would 1\32 or 1\35 be more suited to normal 28mm figs?

Have you been to their store or are they just internet people?

Walked through it and there's piles of stuff and they do lots of different types of stuff as well, you could spend piles in it.
I think 1\35 is closer but don't think there's too much differance with 1|32, it depends on what it is.

Miniatures aren't real-life proportional.  Mathematically, you'd think it would be 1:72 which would make a one inch figure the size of a 6 foot person.  Bah.  Trial and error, you gotta see what works.  For vehicles, I hear folks like the 1:35.  For ships, that would vary widely, so I'd go for the actual size of the deck and remove any details that might obscure the size of the mini.  I bought a couple of wooden decorative ships from a furniture store for $25.  They're aren't quite right, but I'll be able to make do with them.

That may be right Ched as I had a look thru the buildings and they say 1\72 is also ok for 28mm but yeah I guess theres no way of telling til you get em.  On the ships they have the diameters in mm but the pictures are crud* so you cant make a close guess....

28mm figures are closer to somewhere between 1:64 and 1:58, generally speaking. 1:72 would be a little bit on the small side, especially for heroic 28mm stuff, but it all depends how accurate you want to get :)

28mm would be anything from1/48 to 1/60 scale (depending on who makes the minis).

You're probably going to have more luck finding something in 1/48 scale and it would probably do the trick alright.

Yup.As a rule I'd always go for a bigger, rather than smaller scale. That way you won't end up with hatches too small for your minis to climb through or cannon they could fit into their backpacks :)

As I collect Dwarfs, the height of the 1/72 stuff may be ok for me but the width of doors and things will be too small I guess...

I was looking into barrels and crates and stuff like that also so I will look for 1/48 scale.  They have pots and pans and tables and kitcheny stuff that I like the look of too but I'll contact them b4 I order anything to make sure of sizes.

For quick reference, 1:72 is standard Airfix kit scale. Think of the size of the pilots or crew in the tanks and planes you used to make and you'll see that scale's probably way off even for your dwarfs.72nd is "true" 1-inch-to-the-foot scale but it's been a long,long time since the regular manufacturers made wargames or fantasy minis to that scale.

I seem to remember Wargames Foundry had one as a pdf download.Unfortunately my bookmarks folder got corrupted last week so I can't quicklink it...Think it was a fairly basic one,though - tabletop rather than display standard...

Was just going to say that and i downloaded it at some point but i'm not sure where i have it or if i still do.
Might be on one of the piles of d-drive stuff back-ups DVD's that i never get round to sorting out and keep getting added to. :wristy:

The first Lonewolf condu... (can't remember the name or spell it) RPG\world of lonewolf book has plans and some you can photo copy\scan for making boats but they are basic and for gaming.
