As I understand it, no matter what ritual, legality, or magic you put into it, a marriage is all about announcing to your "community" (whatever that means to you) that you have merged your lives to become a team, that you'll stand united as a family and share common goals and support eachother with common resources.

My wife and I lived together for a few years before getting married, and it made a profound impact on both of us, in terms of sharing goals and supporting eachother intellectually as well as emotionally and financially.

I am bitterly disgusted by folks in this region who feel that legalizing or recognizing same-sex unions will somehow degrade the sanctity of marriage.  If their bond is so weak that someone else's bond can degrade theirs, they have other problems.  Geesh.

But those who live together and say, "eh, we don't have to get married, we're together enough," well, Amanda and I felt the same way (at least, she did), were surprised at how it changed our lives.  But then, theres those poor fools who get "married," but aren't unified at all.

In my opinion, if you are a unit and the community sees you as such, you're married.

Um... for the first time in my life, I'm enjoying being single. Weirdly considering I'm the best man at my best friend's wedding in June. I thought I was going to be all "boo hoo, I have no-one in my life", but actually I'm all "hell yeah, I don't have to worry about anyone but me!"

My wife loves me, therefore she loves my hobby...sorted  :icon_razz:.

All she has to do is let me get on with what I do and smile when I show her the latest thing I've done (without yawning) and she knows that she has kept me happy.  I do the same for her when she does the same with the things she likes to do.  It's great  :icon_w00t:.

Even if I "divorced" today I still wouldn't have a "don't have to worry about anyone but me" situation. Three kids tend to produce such a situation  :icon_wink:
I never long to be single but sometimes I can wish for a moment ALONE. As it is now almost the only place where I end up more or less alone is under water (and even then I have a diving buddy next to me...). I haven't been away from the kids for more than two days in a row for eleven years now while my wife - due to work - quite often goes away on two week long trips for various reasons.
But for the most part it's positive anyway  :59:
