taking the plunge into 15mm

well the contraints of money, space and time (in that order)  have meant that in order to keep my hobby going i've had to take a serious look at 15mm wargaming.

with all my love of things dark age i shall be picking up some 15mm viking/saxon armies for DBA and Basic impetvs.

the plan is to have 'pick up games' on the dinner table at home (my miniatures cabinet is right next to it)  and to get my daughter involved in a bit of simple waraming.

I have a few manufacters that i'm going to check out at salute next week but if anybody knows of good quality (and cheap) 15mm stuff then let me know!

I think 15mm.co.uk (same co. as Alternate Armies) is going to be at Salute.  I don't know how much historical stuff they do, though.

Essex Miniatures is probably worth a look, and Peter Pig is always good quality - although I don't think they've got any Dark Age miniatures.

been looking at some of the Xyston DBA army boxes too (although mostly classical armies)

I picked up Two Dragons... which are Ok despite the paving slab thick shields.

Xystron are the quality to beat in 15mm

Essex are variable

Lancashire Games are basic rank fillers

Peter Pig are again Ok

Museum miniatures are small and old school

East Riding Miniatures are  OK  and quick mail order

I have to disagree there.  Irregular Miniatures are to bumpy and pointy to make good fishing weights - they get caught on the bottom far too much.  They're not even good for that! :)

For rank and file you could cast your own, I picked up some moulds and bits and it's not hard to do.

The fantasy ones I got from them are 15mm but the viking/saxon they have are 40mm.

My dad built quite large 15mm Norman, saxon and Viking armies a few years ago, he worked them out so he could play the norman conquest of England, (The battles of Gate Fulford, Stamford bridge and Hastings) at something like 1:10
they are made up from a mix of companies old glory 15s, essex miniatures, minifigs and a few others....

i much prefer 15mm for gaming, i like building historically worked armies, i have brit and french napoleonics and colonial stuff (zulu war/sudan/boer war)
my dad has normans, saxons, vikings, crusades, english civil war, american civil war, Romans, zulu war, nap Austrians, egyptians, persians, greeks, ww2 germans and a few others  :shrug: much of his stuff though is packed away in the attic, whilst mine is mostly unpainted  :icon_wink:

i don't know, just noticed now, i haven't bought any og from Adrien at battle honours for ages, i think og15s usa is still ok..it's just battle honours.
