Gormenghast

Would the architecture in the opening scenes of the BBC's Gormenghast serve as good scenery?  I can't find any good examples of it unfortunately.

Recently reread the books for the eight time so I'm all for it without even having seen any BBC pictures. I LOVE the Gormenghast books. So vastly original and different from almost ALL other fantasy out there.

Recently reread the books for the eight time so I'm all for it without even having seen any BBC pictures. I LOVE the Gormenghast books. So vastly original and different from almost ALL other fantasy out there.

When the BBC did a radio version they did a really good job of it (and Sting actualy played Steerpike with Imelda Staunton as countess Groan). They only did the first two books.

When they did a telly version in the 90's Imelda Staunton reprised her rols as countess Groan (but Sting wasn't in it, although Christopher Lee was mr Flay, the bloke who used to do Alf Garnet was the old librarian and a whole host of big names were shoe horned in like SPike Milligan as the old school teacher). Too many of the characters looked too pretty (Fuschia and Titus are meant to look ugly). They also only did the first two books.

I would wonder why they never touched the third book if I hadn't read it. It's even got a little note in the front stating that 5 chapters were originaly missing but the book was published without them and nobody noticed for about 20-30 years (as it was unfinished anyway). The third book's not as good as the other two, pretty depressing without the usual Gormenghast wit and fantastical style (unless you count a crocodile's skull tied to a car bonnet as fantastical).

If you scroll about halfway down that last one they've got the castle mini model used for long shots in a glass case. There's no close up shots but it should help to give a rough idea of what the Sargeant's thinking of.

'The Art of Gormenghast' book has a few shots of the model and set-work used for the tv series, though to be honest it gives a lot more picture-coverage to the costumes...

THAT!? GORMENGHAST!?
I've allways figured it as an immensely vast building. Those ones are WAY to small for the picture in my head.
