I find clean new metal is harder to do than used,old and rusty types.

Turquoise is good for corrosion on brass,copper and such.

Let me start by saying that I do like this article, and I think it does take forward the whole NMM thing in a good way.

I've always thought that NMM is good, but would be better done with metal paints.  I guess that would be MMM, then :)  And that is what I try and do most of the time, recently - but never as good as this chap!

But the only little thing that bugs me about the article is: what kind of metal is he trying to represent? It doesn't look much like steel, to be honest - perhaps a dirty iron?

When I've read tutorials on other subjects, painters consider the texture that they're trying to achieve - a woollen cloak, a silk shirt, the ubiquitous sheer harlot's blouse, denim jeans, etc.  But for some reason when it comes to metal, it seems that no-one considers different metals have different appearances. Its just "silver" or "gold", when in real life different metals have different refractive properties, colours and shines.

I'll stop now before this turns into a rant - just a little something that has been bugging me for a while, and I've only just put my finger on.

I admit I don't like the colour effect but if you use the technique and glaze or wash with a more 'realistic' colour you'll get a good result.

I cant find fault with the colours of metal at all, its the cloak that I dont like.  It goes from red to green on right side and red to blue on left and it just doesnt look right to me.  Where the rest of the fig looks so natural, the cloak throws the scheme out.

I hadn't noticed that.  Perhaps he's going for one of those thermochromic fabrics that were all the rage in the 90s until people realised they just highlighted your armits and any part of you that was really close to the fabric, which was mostly beer bellies and breasts :)

Yeah, I guess you're right Mr Gi6ers.   My ire has receeded - I think the technique is a good one, it is his example that could be better (and less complex).

I think the technique is sound. Just pick the right washes to represent the metals and refractive inidices of your choice :)

I found with my Black Orc wyrd entery, that at one point his shoulder guard look more copper kettle than rusty metal.

Just wondering if combining metal and normal paints would work and I don't mean just mixing them.

Im just starting to try bits of this technique with washes and nmm with mm, i think this will help a bit more, (although i agree with those that say the colors are a bit odd.)

Sebastians an excellent painter, Im trying to follow a lot of his techniques. The blue cloak probably is because he is heavily influenced by the french and spanish styles where they use variations of colours to shade and tone. He is a big fan of using purples and reds to shade green and the like.
