Taxxis and the war rhino
« on: October 21, 2007, 06:50:05 AM »

Ok. Im working on this at the moment as the mood has struck me.

I never liked the whole deth mini, so i thought she deserved a kickass woolly war rhino from Maidenhead miniatures.
Im placing some armour plates on with apoxie/greenstuff in a 50/50 mix. You can see how i can sharpen and file the edge on the plate beneath the saddle. However i have alot more to do now.

I want to have some chainmail dangling from the sides, but im having trouble making it look good. Ive restripped it a couple of times. Any ideas ?

Great idea!

Is it standing in a tub of impression material?

I'd look for a tutorial on sculpting chainmail...  I think there's a trick to it.  Or you could just use those drapey bits from the plastic chaos marauders sprue.

MIke, you have got to look at Maidenhead miniatures then, they are a great company. Kurt - nice combo! I want one!

Does it have dungeons?
Does it have dragons?
Does it have transients who kill things for money?  Do you roll a d20?

There are some nice prehistoric animals available from WI at shows.... the resin mammoths at £7 each are a real bargain.. I have 4 waiting for me to find the right riders.

Your wooly Rhino looks the DB mate.... a nice tute on doing the chainmail would be good as you do it.

chainmail is fairly simple. cocktail sticks are needed for it.

sharpen one end to a super sharp point and have the other end as it comes.

wet the cocktail stick in some water, jab lots of holes with it (right until you hit the mammoth) then systematically row by row nudge the edge of each circle hole to the right for the first row, then the left for the row below.

work top to bottom always starting in the top left if you are right handed (as i am)

you from something like this:

ooooooooooo
ooooooooooo
ooooooooooo
ooooooooooo

to hopefully:

))))))))))))
((((((((((((
))))))))))))
((((((((((((

practice on some blu tack first

I was talking to Louis Wong last weekend (won a demon this year with a self sculpt) and he is a dentist. He says sculpting comes alot more natural to him than painting due to always working with the tools etc...
Does this apply to you aswell AM?

Id say yes and no. The material is so different that i find it takes me a while to get it to do what i want it to do. Composite is command set with light, i also rely on a drill to cut away when i sculpt at work, so i find that whacking bits of resin on and removing it is easier for me. thats why it looks like a blob at the moment. its similar to how i restore teeth.

They are coming along better. Remember a little sand paper to go over them would also help smooth them out.

How about adding side sponson baskets for archers or pikemen?  Make it into a sort of amazon seige engine?  Or a high backed enclosure for here-or at the least a high backed throne thing?  The Rhino just seems too big for her?

  Something like this

Thanks for the picture Baldemyr, yeah thats something i had in mind. The palisade im not sure about, but its an idea i could develop. I have plans for some spikes, and even a little platform for her spell book. I actually like the size difference because she is tiny. It makes her look more powerful with her magic being able to control a beast like that with a small chain.

If you want to get all arty like, perhaps its an analogy of the female form over the stereotypical wargamer!! lol... the beast held captive by a nude woman....  :icon_cool:  :icon_ermm:   maybe not...  :Doh!:
