OK Andys comments about bases on the FOD sent me looking for Klockes miniatures.....

Freebooter... lipped metal rectangular  or square bases.. which a diorama base slips into.

How are these Freebooter figures to paint?  I have one sitting in my unpainted pile.... looking accusingly at me as I type... but the freebooter range has so many nice looking figures.

these just appeal, I don't know if it is the painting or the figure.

But what are they like to paint?

Very challenging and not for beginners IMO. the detail is shallow but good.

I've had a semi-finished blackbeard in the part painted mountain for about a year...Werner is a very talented sculptor and 'the face' is the easiest bit to paint for me.

The bases are the nuts, the bit of scenic insert site in there well, he includes little diorama bits and the legs have pins so there is no buggering about with slottas.

If Enigma had this basing setup or even just the pin approach I'd be a happy chappy.

I have two that I are sitting in the pile. Wow those pics really show off 'the face'

Conker HEEDS!

Not really a fan of Klocke TBH, a few nice ones, but not something I would buy.

He's got it right. They are challenging to paint (especialy if you try to fully assemble them before painting). They usualy come in at least 6 or 7 parts (with a few being only 3 or 4 pieces).Often these parts are quite small and fiddly so you need to treat them carefuly. My best advice would be to leave the arms off when you paint them (if they are separate, the gun arm on the last model pictured is separate for example) and maybe leave them detatched from the base until you've got at least a certain ammount of blocking in done.

Since it's been a while since I posted them and people might have forgotten what he looks like, I have some (badly illuminated) photo's of the first Klocke dwarf. I took another photo recently (it's in the Hammergirls thread as the size comparisson pic).

His style is technicaly very good but can get very repetitative after a while (since if it's female it always has the same face and his human often men have a certain facial style in common too).

I'm happy that Klocke does the same mistake I do with female (and elven) faces. FAR to broad by the eyelevel and triangular enough to almost be an alien grey face. Still painted up it looks pretty anyway.
Personally I think Sandra Garritys female faces tend to be MORE repetitive than Klockes.

I've not got onto painting any of the Freebooter stuff . Werner has a lot of nice nice sculpts but he turns out more than his fair share of average stuff as well. His female faces certainly get a bit samey, you can always spot a Werner lady, triangular catlike face and anime eyes. For some it works, for others not. I am planning to get a few of the Freebooter sculpts and I've got both size versions of his Monique Du Noir for Reaper and they're both ace.

Just got the freebooter gal with the frying pan.  She looks really good, lots of character.  Haven't closely examined it yet, my painting progress is at an alltime low.
Nevermind me, I have a cruddy banner, so please click HERE for Cheddarmongers!

i like his sculpting, but as Balgin says the fact that they come in a bazillion tiny bits makes them hard work.

his stuff for reaper is great (i just wish he would use the softer alloy they do)

Hey I like broad cheekbones and round faces. Unfortunately Mr Klocke always does exessively wide cheekbones on very skinny faces (with broad jaws and sunken cheeks which just makes them look like an ugly triangle). It's a shame really so sometimes I like them and sometimes many of them just look too grotesque for me to want to paint (like gargoyles up on the steeple of some forgotten church or other).

Bizarrely his big Monique has a less "Klocke" face and more natural proportions to it (although it's still very angular and triangular too but nowhere near as much as his normal stuff).

She's seriously cool. There are still some left? When I got mine it was number 476 of 500 (or something like that). I reckoned there wouldn't be many left for sale elsewhere (even if some of the lower numbered ones ahdn't been sold yet).

Another Klocke trademark is the diagonal creases across the chest on females wearing tight fitting tops. It's always two or three diagonal creases at the same angle (although it flips round so they take turns having one side higher than the other based on the rest of the pose). It's quite visible in the second pic but there's quite a few others with the same feature (especialy a lot of his Reaper elves).
