fifty percent of all detail and smoothing work is done when the putty is semicured. You ALLWAYS have to wait for that stage anyway don't you?
Work on something else while waiting.

It can be MOST simple. I just use a worklight and an old pieform. I put the figure in the pieform and lower the worklight over it. Simple as that. I used to just put it on the table but the heat caused slight discoloration so hence I started using the pieform to protect the table.

i am used to sculpting 'wet' so to speak  i don;t get the time to let stuff cure for the required time, so i just do my best and then carve back or trim stuff with a scalpel the next day and have another go if required.

i can get 80-90% of what i want to be done within 30 minutes generally, after that the traits of the material start to kick in and my limitations start.

i have done minis where everything is perfected and no element is left untouched, but that burnt me out in the end and almost destroyed my enjoyment of the hobby.

If you take a sheet of styrene cut to the shape of the banner you are looking for, and then heat it with, well, heat, you can shape them and get them to flow in a relatively short amount of time.

Those tree's are store bought. I will probably be making all of my broadleaf trees from now on.
Check Michaels for the christmas village stock, they have winter trees that make great armatures for scratchbuilt trees. they sell some evergreens too, but nothing to convincing. Tons of other good stuff though.

As for he banners, all of my banners and shingles start as one of these:

If you catch them on clearance, you can get dozens of them for just a few bucks. I personally got a two inch stack of them for $2.00 on closeout.

Flying base or leaping off of something?

i'll try and work out something for him to leap off, but i think a flying base would work well too.

made big progress on the wings today (my son is poorly so i'm at home babysitting rather than at work)

once the current putty work is dry i can set to work on the basing issue.

as i said lots of progress today  i think i may even have a method for connecting the mini with the base.

i have sculpted a small peg that goes through the claws on the back feet.

the wings are on but i need to let the putty set then clean them up a little.
