Bodhi, have a look at 'thieves' cant' on Google or on Wikipedia, and you'll get plenty of creative insults!

I always hated the system of "counting monsters killed and treasures found" as a way of awarding experience. In real life neither would really give all that much experience and the finding of a treasure...

actually seeing as levelling up increases your combat proficiency being in a fight is an integral way of gaining experience, even when training active sparing is the only thing that will truly hone your skills
it would however be nice to have other measurable ways of gaining experience

Oh yes, active sparring, but in the most basic form only KILLS count towards experience and actually killing doesn't increase combat proficiency. It does of course increase battle hardiness (or post war traumas) though.

oh certainly but d20 runs it on defeating the opponent so say putting them to flight, disabling them, anything like that, killing people is somewhat more a side effect of having whooped them, something most of my characters try to avoid these days

I overheard a couple of serious jailbirds having a conversation in the subway the other day. What really struck me was how direct and forthright in their language they were. The talked about "Hitting someone", about "beating someone" (nothing more than that - juvenile delinquents often have a tendency to add some gross exaggerations to the "beating" but these were older guys so they just used the one word but it was implied by tone that the beating would indeed be severe) about "killing", all very straightforward talk and nothing of the poetic formulations and roundabout way of mentioning these things that you often see in films. They called a spade a spade and this was really more scary than any type of "Godfather" speak could ever have been. You got the feeling that this was their business and they were good at it. A most unpleasant couple they were...

I'm really looking forward to the interraction of characters, especially with their keys!  Are keys personal, or will we know eachothers?

Oh, I forgot, are we using the 3.0 or 3.5 rules?  (or do I care?)

You'll know each others' keys, in fact one element that the designer stresses is playing off one another's keys to gain XP.

We're using 3.5 except in one or two areas that aren't really relevant at this point in time.
