I always hated the system of "counting monsters killed and treasures found" as a way of awarding experience. In real life neither would really give all that much experience and the finding of a treasure...

actually seeing as levelling up increases your combat proficiency being in a fight is an integral way of gaining experience, even when training active sparing is the only thing that will truly hone your skills
it would however be nice to have other measurable ways of gaining experience

Oh yes, active sparring, but in the most basic form only KILLS count towards experience and actually killing doesn't increase combat proficiency. It does of course increase battle hardiness (or post war traumas) though.

Very useful thanks! Especially the 3.0 index files; although I have the 3.0 rulebooks, it's handy to have these to refer to. I have the d20srd.org page set up in Firefox as a series of indexed bookmarks as well as a search engine, which makes looking things up easier.

Yes indeed, you can use any except drow (done to death) or aquatic (tricky to make fit in the campaign). So that's high, gray, wild, or wood. Also take a look at the elf paragon class and see if it appeals http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/racialParagonClasses.htm#elfParagon
