Inspiration please

Ok looking for inspiration.

I bought some Pig Iron figures

I have been racking my brain all day trying to find inspiration on how to paint them.
Thick trenchcoats suggest cold weather... but I want to avoid the Imperial guard look or the WW2 Germans.

I thought I might go for a bit of snow camo, maybe with thin sheet like coverings sculpted over some coats, but its the basic coat I need inspiration on.

Any suggestions?

The first thing I would suggest is to google 'snow camouflage' and check the images that come up.  I searched 'urban camouflage' earlier and there were hundreds of pix.  That will sort out your camo choice problems.

Standard snow camo for most general army units is simply a white oversuit.

I think it would be very difficult to get away from the WWII / Imperial guard look, no matter what you do.

Instead of camo etc. why not go for a completely plain look.  All black perhaps.

Failing that, how about camo underneath and a pure white overcoat.

I have to agree with Inso as they shout German WWII at me.  :icon_neutral:

Go with 'urban camouflage' and a dark blue or black for the trench coat and judge Dredd there helmets, black with a red edge.

Cheers for the ideas.... I have spent some time googling snow camo.....and US at Ardennes, and russians at stalingrad

simple seems best. I just can't bring myself to do "WW2 Germans" it is so flipping cliched, and the only germans I have are Luftwaffe....

I have carved a helmet out already... to hang from a belt, with a Westwind seperate bare head.

The images of the Alt WW2 westwind heads with gas masks for Amerians and Brits just seem so tempting, to do something different.

This is going to seem a bit odd...but how about painting them in fetish colours?  Black combats/scarlet coats and helms.  Sort of a bizarre 'Clockwork Orange' theme.  They certainly wouldn't look WWII German then!

Those colours reminds me of am 80's cartoon\comic\action figure's but i can't remember what it was called.
I know the leader of the bad guys left his troops to be destroyed and started a new force and his old second in command took command of the old force.

You've probably already gone with the snow thing, but where I saw this on the stand at Triples this weekend, I was thinking that they might looks good with a dirty light-brown colouring to their uniforms.  Like the sort of work leather you get (or used to get) in heavy industry where there is a lot of atmospheric pollution, i.e., a steelworks or an iron foundry.

I'd either go for the easy option of leather - Snakebite leather with a scorched brown/black wash with a touch of chestnut ink or a paler option of kommando khaki with a wash of KK plus a touch of scorched brown.

These'll look good with a dirty look to them so a glaze of your base colour and some dark browns around the bottom of the coat, do several passes adding more brown as you go lower.

I have been trying to fit the heads.... a real pain, very thicksprue connectioon means a lot of cleaning up, then a shallow depression to glue them in means an unstable join.

They need pinning or Westwind heads.

I contemplated the black/fetish look.. but it would look too SS /Jon Roh, and I can't get shiney black PVC and laether to look right, so I am going for a brown wollen overcoat on the grunts with a leather coat for the squad leader, and a couple with the dodgy casting at the rear I think I am going to try a thin sheet type overcoat for camo over the trench coat.

Uniform underneath... well after I had a play with some Westwind bare heads I might go for US helmet with Gasmask from westwind to get stronger joins, so they will be in Olive green as a homage to US infantry in WW2. I'll see when the head arrive.

I found some 1/32 figures for ardennes, germans dressed as Yanks with repainted disguised german equipment.. looked strange and alt WW2 so I might try a 1/56 scale version. Just need to sculpt scarves on the figures.
