I need display bases

I need something like this:



I am doing a unit of models and i want a display plinth to put them on and have a space in the middle recessed so that the GW gaming bases sit flush at the same level as the display base surface.

I've been getting quotes from trophy manufacturers and picture framers and nothing comes in at under £30 ! :icon_eek:

i'm after something 200mm x 100mm and to have a recessed area of 150mm x 50mm. si ther anybody who can help me find or even make for me something simiar?

whatever comes to be honest. i'd either want a flat black finish (so resin or acrylic) or a dark hardwood.

You could also try looking at Us sights. With the conversion rate you might find something that is a good value. I'll start looking.

actually it would be better if you specified a bit more, do you just need the display , or the stuff on it as well? (grass, skulls etc).
if you just need the wood, you can do what i do, witch is go to your local (or any) carpenter and explain what you want, all the carpenteer really has to do is get a propper sized board (witch he can cut in a matter of seconds, and run a router around the edges, or you can sand it yourself. the whole thing should take less than 5 minutes of his time, and then you can simply spray or stain the board the colour you want.

as for the inside of the wood being carved out, it can also be done easily this a drill and the same router technique, with a different bit of course.

actually ive done this many times myself, with all manner of items.

another thing to look at is the lids off plastic containers, they are a bit flexable but GW black spray does them up a treat.

i'm just after the base, i'll detail the rest to my own specifications.

it's a cae of making the models on gaming bases look like they are part of a diorama/scene, but are removable for gaming or individual inspection.

@hawkins  any idea what you might be prepared to charge to do it?  pm me

If you check the first link I dropped the 6mm recessed MDF bases may be right up your street. They're all less than a fiver although considerably bigger than what you're looking for. The guy makes custom sized stuff  so if you contact him you may be able to get stuff made. Can't imagine cost running too high even for custom ones, especially if you're going to order a few.

well i wasnt volenteering to make it for you, the problem is i dont have a router at the moment, or a circular saw so id have to go beg or borrow one. but i tell you what, gimme the dimensions (in and out) and i'll talk to a friend of mine thats a carpenteer, he probably has everything i need and as for cost... ppfffff. it would only cost you the shipping and maybe a couple € that id slip him to do the work.

What id need specifically is pretty much ever dimension, inner and outer, including the distance between the inner cut to the outer edge (on all sides if they are different.)depth of the inner cut, and so on. any way, send me that and then i'll get back to you once i know i can get it done.

Just in from work or I'd have replied sooner. I could make you a one-off in laminated ply for about a fiver, acrylic for about the same. Laser-cut in either case.

Nice idea, though. I might have to add something like this to the back-wrenchingly long to-do list :)

That's why I was looking at them although in the end I got my base for 79p from Lidl  :icon_cool:
Might still mount it on a plinth of some description if I'm feeling flush nearer the deadline.
Probably should add a DoD WIP again soon.
