My first sculpt ever

Okay everyone, have a laugh. First off, this isn't my most recent sculpt (it's more like my only sculpt). Next, it's not recent (I did it around six or seven years ago, basicaly a day or two after the Inquisitor rulebook was released).

Finaly, some twerp (the same kid who's so out of it that he managed to leave a beautifuly painted rare miniature in his trouser pocket when he put his trousers in the washing machine) decided that it would dry better if he laid it down on it's side overnight (hence crushing and flattening it all up one side a bit so I had to resculpt some of the visor, face and bits of the clothing and armour).

It contains an almost complete ogre (some of you may recognise him). I did have to cut various limbs and bits off and reposition them). The head is a mysterious ball of lead from a guy's bits box that was the right size for me to start sculpting a head onto.

So he's 54mm. When I'd finished his beard I noticed one guy at the club sculpting a head and doing really good straggly hair on it (better than my attempts) so I asked if he'd be willing to redo the beard for me. He picked up his sculpting tool and did some really basic deep creases (which were actualy worse than my original attempt and a lot worse than what he'd been doing).

So here we have it: the 54mm squat! (He kicked serious arse in Inquisitor too armed only with his flak jacket, lasgun, knife, two grenades and a dummy grenade).

Why should anybody laugh? If you had kept at it until today you would have been a good sculptor by now. Nice texturing to the jacket, good detailing - even if it could do with some sharpening. All in all a fine one for a first sculpt ever (especially one that has been through such a number of accidents).

My only sculpting tool was my scalpel (it's amazing what you can do with that handle, it's got flat surfaces, curves and then there's the back of the blade, or even the sharp edge of the blade itself).

Well bear in mind that there's an ogre's body, both his arms, both his legs and both his feet in there (the reason I listed these parts separately is that I had to cut them all apart then fuse them back in to the sculpt).

Yeah I use the handle of my scalpel quite a lot to. The silliest thing I did yesterday. I thought the scalpel handle was a perfect flat surface to flatten out some putty on and then cut(!!) it into shape. So I flattened out some putty and then looked EVERYWHERE for... my scalpel... For about half an hour! :violent1:

I agree with Bodhi, it is a nice first attempt. You should get back into sculpting.

I think thats great for a first go, as Bodhi says the detail just needs sharpening up.  Keep at it !

I have only really peeked in the door of sculpting so i can't give any advice.  :icon_sad:

Good start, you should give it a go as your be able to improve figures you buy (replace over sized weapons and such  Wink) or even make a figure for a character you after but can't find a sculpt to fit it right.

Why do you think I'm currently looking for people willing to docertain difficult sculpts/convertions at the moment? I know I can't do them justice but I'd really like to get them done.

Keep trying it's the only way to improve, it's what i'm doing.

I have a cheddarmonger, dying\dead guy on base and a GW LOTR sized Dwarf on the go but the Dwarf is still in a two stick's and blob body stage.  :icon_redface:
