how would you go about making a dragon's lair?

basically a cave or cavern with stalagtites, stalagmites and rocks....etc.

it would be around 30cm x 30cm and maybe 20 cm high (enough to fit a spined dragon in)

i have zero idea how to do it. has there beeing any previous examples anywhere?

Bungle

carve them from blue board..... coat with PVA and sawdust to get a key

then smooth polyfiller over them to get the water dripped effect of Mites & Tights

If you are truly daring and have an outside area to work in, you could use acetone to eat away the foam to shape the lair. You could also use Woodland Scenics water effects to make the stalagmites.

Sounds good! You going to make a hoard too? Is this for a GD entry?

Damn I step away from the PC and you guys covered most of it. Stu you could also take a look at the Peter's DOD thread on the FoD. His has an entrance and that might give you some ideas. Are you thinking of something with a removable roof?

i will make a big hoard too (so eventually when i fathom how to do make the lair i will be asking for bits and bobs.)

not so much a gd entry, more of a classic diorama you used to see in the later 80's /early 90's white dwarfs.  i'm looking for some dwarf adventurers/miners at the moment to go with it.

Someone from the Reaper board made a classic treasure pile.  Check out the tutorial here:

Dunno... I think that treaure pilelooks rather... er... ugly. I'm sure a better job could be made of it. To my mind the glitter was not a good idea. Better with something that LOOKS like coins.

My suggestion for stalagmites stalgtites would simply be to let medium thick plaster drop to the shape you wanted but I see how the other suggestions would be considerably more durable. Concrete would work but is hard to mix at home  :icon_wink:

the little gems look good but would need painting to work IMO. Coins are easy, even I can sculpt a thin bit of GS and chop it up, other than that you'd need a few goblets, gold plates?

and do a search on the reaper site for treasure, fenryll do some decent treasure chests too.

I'd also chuck in some ornate armour and weapons too..

I might do something smaller with a couple of dragon hatchlings I've just ordered...

Fabian

I get the impression the Reaper one looks better in RL, perhaps with shading it would look good?
The questions we should be asking are these:
Does it have dungeons?
Does it have dragons?
Does it have transients who kill things for money?  Do you roll a d20?

Theomar Pius

I always thought that reaper one looked better before the wash. I'd think the dragon would be a bit finickey about keeping his treasure clean.

Reaper did that too.

Thanks dargin.  That is a ridiculously simple method.  I only ever use GS to fill, but I might have a go an making some coins, if it is that easy! :D
