For something like this unless you have a huge budget to build in all the security options and also get the licences, you are better off doing it open source.

That is a good point, Mike.  I quite often forget about the possibility of open source because I work in the commercial world - but that would be a good way to get it done - although you might be even harder pressed to get the big boys like GW involved with a product that had an irremovable "free" label attached to it - even if it didn't apply to them!

Thats why I initially suggested doing it with real color names and then charts could be made up for conversions. It removes any concerns with other companies right away.

if the program is open source or free then GW could just take it and do what they wanted with it wouldnt they?  they wouldnt want to do a deal as they dont need to.  Or doesnt it work like that?

Custom_Hobby

I don't think so. They could try to make their own version (since they have the money) but I believe you can still copyright it before releasing it to stop others from profiting from your idea. Plus it could be like Adobe does with Acrobat Reader, you can get the free version but Acrobat Pro has all the features you really want and you need to pay.

The Adobe way would be good, gives a little taster.  But as u say thats where costs go up quickly !!

Custom_Hobby

Very in that case, but it was just the first thing that came to mind :icon_wink:

we can pretty much get any game or program working with cracks so doubt theres much point investing in protection, just keeping GW's hands off it would be satisfying though  :icon_w00t:

It would only be to keep others from profiting off of something that would otherwise be free. It is a nice idea. Too bad I don't have the technical expertise or a team to do it.

One day it'll be out there I'm sure of it.  If I'm still around I will say "Ah yes I thought of that"  :icon_w00t:  And probably never use it lol

Ive had some education in 3d modelling -problem is this would be a lot of work.  To have a "real" release would probably cost money- you could probably drag it down to 50 dollars per represented item-although I cant be too sure of that since Ive been out a while.
Much better idea would be line drawings in flash (IMO).  Much like the SM painter GW has.    It seems like it would be easy enough to do.  Get someone to rip off generic pics to keep the mini companies off your back and I think the idea would work.
