Sometimes I hear people mumbling about "how did you get that cost for minis past the wife?" and stuff like that. So I thought I'd start a thread on it.
My wife is very supporting of my sculpting. She thinks I should do what I'm good at and supports my every effort to get better. She even supported my brief (and since abandoned) effort to make a fulltime job of it, despite the lowering of income this resulted in. So all's fine then?
No. The problem is with me. I find that when I do sculpt I turn into something of a grumpy old man: "Do you have to breathe so loud while I'm working on this face?" Stuff like that. It's not a good thing and I doubt that her patience will stretch on forever.
So I'll have to change my grumpiness when sculpting or we'll face serious problems soon.
So - what's everybody elses expererience of combining the hobby with the family?
With the family my son and daughter love it. My son likes collection miniatures and my daughter always wants to paint. My ex-wife never understood, even when it was bringing in money. I guess that is a small part of why she is my ex-wife. My mother also just sits back and is amazed and what can be done with such small items.
My daughter sits down and sculpts with me quite often. Mostly she works with Sculpey but she's done a green stuff figure and the skeleton of a pro create figure. She's NOT interested in fantasy/SF or historicals though but more into "Living dead dolls", zombies, vampires and the like (She's an eleven year old Tim Burton fan) My youngest son likes to take plastic figures and poke at them with clayshapers with an intent and serious expression in his face . He's two years old. My oldest son (7) isn't interested in sculpting or painting but definitely in collecting and gaming. So I can't help him since these two are parts of the hobby I'm not familiar with.
My future wife is very supportive and very good at giving feedback (although not as brutal as I like). She understands that I do it as a stress reliever so is more than happy...
I also suffer from the concentration resulting in perceived grumpiness - but she knows me well enough to let me get on with it. (Even if she always comes over to interrupt when I'm working on a fine detail.
My wife is quite happy about my hobby.... she asks what "toys" i got when i come back from shows.. and often says.. you didn't spend much? what you saving up for?
Her father was a toy train fan, so I guess she is happy and used to "men with their toys"
But.. she is unhappy with painting and modelling stuff being in 3 rooms of the house, living room to paint while she watches TV... little room to model & paint in, and spare bedroom to pile high with Kits, terrain boards and bits for modelling.....
shes just an :angel4: :icon_wub:
My wife also has to put up with:
Dripping SMELLY drysuit hanging over the bathtub for twentyfour hours after every diving trip and taking up quite an amount of space in between.
Leadweights and three bottles of air taking up space in the wardrobe.
It's not like we have a big apartment...
And she does! I'm constantly amazed... now where was that smiley... :angel4:
My wife fully supports my hobby......my girlfriend on the other hand..
My wife is not at all interested interested in what I do in the garage with little men - but she understand (and sees) that playing, and especially painting, massively relaxes me every session.
She even sent me to Triples the morning our daughter was discharged from Special Care (she arrived 10 weeks early) because she knew that I'd been looking forward to it and it would relax me. And it was a lot better than sitting in the hospital waiting for paperwork to be done. The hospital is 5 mins walk from the place where Triples is held, though!
My wife is incredibly supportive. So, I'd interrupt her reading with, "let me show you a thing!" and she'll review my progress. Now she's becoming more critical, pushing me to greater quality. "Remember honey, its the details!" Sometimes I have to just say, "Sorry, this one is done!" It's awesome. Also, she doesn't mind when I spent money on gaming stuff. She even encourages me to seek out gaming opportunities, and she's offered to accompany me to events if I'm feeling too shy.
Of course, as I'm supportive of her $100 per week reading habbit, I guess her support of my hobby is reasonable... :cm
Every single woman I have ever dated has despised anything and everything I draw after initially claiming they loved it and wanted me to continue.
Some openely mocked my painting of minis...some have mocked my drawing...
Every last one of them has in some way tried to stop my loves.
Edit- important Andrew stupidness-my current GF, an older woman(my first) seems to not just tolerate my work-she pushes me further.
That's terrible - I can't believe they mocked it! ooh that really winds me up!
Calming down... glad to hear things are better now.
I was obviously only kidding in my earlier post.
My wife to be (11 weeks and counting to the big day!) is not fussed either way about my hobby. The only time she gets frustrated is when i buy a new mini or game that i then take ages to play/paint or never even use. Fair enough i suppose.
My wife (sixteen years and going ;) ) is the same about my books. I have a tendency to find books in fleemarkets that I just MUST buy since they're cheap and "might be useful sometime...". Most of them - admittedly - just end up taking up space.
I guess this is going to be a wife test, I just bought ultra-rare Thrud on the Giant's Head off of SteveB. That's the most I ever spent on a miniature. :icon_scratch: I wonder how she's going to react...??? :cm
Will you tell us how much you paid? Cheddar you are the master Thrud collector!
I am going to need help tracking down one of those casts. anyone hear or spot anything please let me know. I really loved that base. I wonder if I can beg Steve to make another?
heh heh heh. The agreement wasn't astronomical, but certainly enough to allow Steve to fill his pockets at Salute. Also enough to spend all my "good husband" points from being dragged around to decorating, furniture, home improvement, flooring, and painting stores all weekend. Grumble grumble. Oh, well.
Seriously, compare this Thrud side by side with Sigurd. If you have Sigurd, this sculpt is pretty close, as Sigurd is really a minor conversion of Thrud.
I also seriously doubt you'd find any of these casts, but good luck! Perhaps start with Bryan Ansel?
When I first met Mrs Tiacapan (we're engaged rather than married but it's been about 12 years so it's close enough to call her Mrs) she was a bit confused by my "little people" but wasn't too bothered as I was her second gamer boyfriend.
Now she plays, paints, the works so it's no problem for me to buy new stuff...now I just need an opponent who I can beat occasionally

When it arrives take a picture of it along with the rest of the collection and post it. If anyone can help me track one down please let me know.
You know, these last few days I've had some thoughts about sculpting a Giant head like that, rising from the water. Something that would slot into a 50mm plastic display base. Might consider it as a display base to be sold alone or I might sculpt something dim-looking to stand on, looking all puzzled as to why the stepping stone is moving...
Another idea to add to the melting pot I suppose but I have a bunch of other figs either palnned or underway.
Plus I just started some new medication which is kicking my ass. Hoping it's a case of suffer a while and then reap the benefits...
Sounds like a fantastic idea for a scenic base, certainly unique!
Well, hang in there. Hope the meds kick in and bring you back to normal.
@SteveB
Do them as scepterate parts so you can use them either way.
Some creative stands like that would be good, if you can do them so you could also use them on a battle field as well then that should increase sale's of them.
Great idea for the base Steve. Hope you feel better.

We're neither engaged nor married but sixteen years and three kids together makes the term "wife" apropriate anyway.
"girlfriend" would sound a bit silly under the circumstances...
For some reason, Amanda gets mad at me when I refer to her as my "girlfriend." Hell, I don't get it. If she weren't my girlfriend, I wouldn't have married her! Geesh. Women.

I have the same problem.. I still slip with the tounge and call her "girlfriend" occasionally... well we have been together for 14 years and I finally proposed on new years eve 1999 (if the world was going to end she might as well be happy).... we will have been married for 5 years in August.. and I still can't get used to it.
I've proposed six times. Usually it sets her of on a long antireligious rant. She's STRONGLY opposed to the whole idea of marriage.
Ahhhh.... civil wedding.... big party for your mates afterwards. :occasion14: not a religious bit in sight :icon_wink:
Nope
I quote her: "Why in the world should we have to prove anything for anyone else?"
You could always argue legal benefits and protections......

My sister is the same.... her and her other half have been together for 22 years.. they have 3 kids.
her other half was married and divorced in a year a long time before he met her.
skirting close to dangerous waters...
As I understand it, no matter what ritual, legality, or magic you put into it, a marriage is all about announcing to your "community" (whatever that means to you) that you have merged your lives to become a team, that you'll stand united as a family and share common goals and support eachother with common resources.
My wife and I lived together for a few years before getting married, and it made a profound impact on both of us, in terms of sharing goals and supporting eachother intellectually as well as emotionally and financially.
I am bitterly disgusted by folks in this region who feel that legalizing or recognizing same-sex unions will somehow degrade the sanctity of marriage. If their bond is so weak that someone else's bond can degrade theirs, they have other problems. Geesh.
But those who live together and say, "eh, we don't have to get married, we're together enough," well, Amanda and I felt the same way (at least, she did), were surprised at how it changed our lives. But then, theres those poor fools who get "married," but aren't unified at all.
In my opinion, if you are a unit and the community sees you as such, you're married.
Um... for the first time in my life, I'm enjoying being single. Weirdly considering I'm the best man at my best friend's wedding in June. I thought I was going to be all "boo hoo, I have no-one in my life", but actually I'm all "hell yeah, I don't have to worry about anyone but me!"
Back to your regular programming. Nothing to see here. :icon_suspicious: :twocents:
My wife loves me, therefore she loves my hobby...sorted :icon_razz:.
All she has to do is let me get on with what I do and smile when I show her the latest thing I've done (without yawning) and she knows that she has kept me happy. I do the same for her when she does the same with the things she likes to do. It's great :icon_w00t:.

Even if I "divorced" today I still wouldn't have a "don't have to worry about anyone but me" situation. Three kids tend to produce such a situation :icon_wink:
I never long to be single but sometimes I can wish for a moment ALONE. As it is now almost the only place where I end up more or less alone is under water (and even then I have a diving buddy next to me...). I haven't been away from the kids for more than two days in a row for eleven years now while my wife - due to work - quite often goes away on two week long trips for various reasons.
But for the most part it's positive anyway :59:
