I have ordered several items from Custom Hobby. I am glad to say
that I am very pleased with the quality and look of ALL of the items
I have ordered. I had considered running a Battle of Minas Tirith
game for some of the conventions I attend but felt I needed a lot
more of the "extras" that Games Workshop did not sell
such as the Seige Towers and Grond. I also was not overly excited
about their version of the Minas Tirith Wall Set.
I was scanning EBAY one day and came across
some handmade orc landing craft. At first I thought it was some
amateur attempt (much like my own attempts) to do some of the
LOTR "extra's". I almost passed it by because I had
just checked out some other really bad home made terrain that
people had thrown up on EBAY but decided to give these a look
anyway.
I AM GLAD I DID. I won the landing craft
(made sure I was going to win that auction!!! My cutoff bid was
much higher than the auction ended for... much to my relief).
Afterward I passed some e-mail back and forth about the possibility
of other projects that Custom Hobby may be able to do for the
"Big Game" I wanted to do.
Long story short, I think I am going to
put their kids through college with all of the fantastic things
I have bought, have on order and am going to order over the next
year (sorry if you hadn't told them they were going to be busy
for the rest of the year Mike) for other cons. I have listed the
items I have so far with a short write-up of each.
Orc Landing Craft. I originally found these
on EBAY and they immediately caught my attention. The landing
craft were probably one of the best finds on EBAY. I have bought
4 of them. Each one is hand made and noticeably different than
each other. The front ramp is moveable up and down and locks into
its upright position. Played them in a couple of demo games in
stores and they drew a lot of attention.
Orcs Seige Towers. The seige towers were
my second buy. I had ordered these after I decided that I could
do the game. I ordered three of them. Each one was different in
appearance. The design had the aged/worn metal plating on them
that looked VERY authentic. The towers each have ramps that raise
and lower. Each tower was in perfect scale for the existing LOTR
miniatures.
Grond Battering Ram. This is so far the
MOST FANTASTIC piece in the collection. You can see this piece
as well as the others in the gallery section of the web site and
the yahoogroup. Grond is over a foot long and as tall at the Seige
Towers and the GW Oliphant!!!! It has walkways on each side for
about 16 archers to cover the ram as it moves into position. Mike
can comment on the number of handcrafted pieces that went into
the model. The ram itself actually moves on the chains that it
is slung with. I can't say enough about how great the Grond piece
is. The pictures do it absolutely NO justice at all, this is truely
a must see in person piece!!!!!! I can't wait to plop (gently
of course) this down on the table at origins this year.
I have a couple of other pieces on the
way one of which will surely rival Grond in size and appearance.
I can't wait to get some pics and do a write up about the upcoming
pieces from Custom Hobby. I would be happy to talk to anyone about
these pieces, feel free to e-mail me at Navarr@aol.com.
thanks,
NICK
