Part 4: Into the Wilderness and beyond!
« on: July 28, 2009, 09:34:06 AM »

The ferryman propells his craft across the river at a leisurely pace, eyeing the clouds and muttering to himself that there might be rain later. Once he reaches the far bank he bids his passengers good day and they head off into the woods. Turning to the south they easily find the stashed raft they saw from the far shore and Yon picks up the blacksmith's tracks. Herr Weiss is not hard to follow as it seems he went crashing through the undergrowth at quite a speed. As the party travel through the forest the trees seem to close in. The wood itself seems to exist in a permanent gloomy, almost twilight, state with occassional shafts of sunlight beaming down through gaps in the canopy overhead. Georg is reminded of some of the more cruel folktales of his homeland and the dwarfs feel unsafe. The lack o clearly defined boundaries, walls, floors and ceilings, means that danger could lurk in any cover. Yon on the other hand is relatively comfortable with this rural surrounding.

After a few hours on the trail the cawing of crows or ravens can be heard from up ahead. Enterring a clearing they come across some half a dozen large ravens feasting upon the remains of Herr Weiss, easily recognisible by his shock of blond hair. The smith lies face down, headed back towards town, a sword protruding from his back. His bag of weapons lies fallen by his side where he dropped it. Georg chases the birds away so he can examine the corpse. The blade that finaly ended his life is a cruel affair, short, curving and serated with a wicked grip no human hand could comfortably hold. There are a number of other small injuries but these have been obscured by the bird's feasting. When Georg turns the body over, a sword cut has slashed the apron open revealing a tattoo of a gold crown pierced by an arrow upon the left breast. His left fist is tightly clenched about a hastily scribbled note that seems to be comprised of pictures more than actual words.

Yon reaches for the note to have a closer look.

"Anyone recognise that tattoo, or that sword?" he asks.  "Funny looking blade, isn't it?"

None present seem able to recognise either. From the defensive wounds on Herr Weiss' forearms and shoulders it would seem that he defended himself before deciding he was too badly wounded or outnumbered to continue the battle and flight was his only option.

From here the blacksmith's trail is fairly easy to follow. It leads up into the foothills of the mountains. As the land rises it becomes less forested and there are plenty of slate deposits Visibly jutting out of the ground. Somewhere between half an hour to an hour later, as the tracks become harder to follow, Hargrin spies a narrow valley in the foothills within which is a concealed cave entrance, hidden by bushes and a tree. There are a few evident footprints elading from the cave. This must be where the smith fled from.

As we proceed and the trees thin out, Yon checks with the Dwarves in the party to see if they're feeling any more comfortable?

As they approach the cavern, the stench of death hangs heavy in the air. Entering the cave our party witness a scene of carnage. About a dozen bodies lie dead within this cave. At least half of which were slain in their sleep, without even having risen from the makeshift beds they rest in. The rest had clearly been sleeping before they rose to fight. One is merely a pair of legs protruding from a crack in the wall at the back of the cave.  A brief investigation proves these men all bear the same tattoo as the blacksmith and that the one wedged into that narrow tunnel openning is still alive, 'though not conscious.

Yon will have a look to see if we can extrack the one that is still alive from the crack, and try and awaken him to find out what has been or is going on.

Shortly afterwards he comes round. As he is coming too he utters the name "Julianne" through dry lips. Slowly his eyes focus on the faces above him as he lies there, lacking the strength to sit. "What is it? Who are you people? Did you get them?!"

"It wuz the beastmen," he gasps, choking back tears, "tiny chittering ebastmen. They cum'd out of the walls while I wuz out answerin' th' call o' nachure. They cum'd an' killed all ther men an' they took her away. we wuz gonna be married an' everyfink."

Clearly his emotional state has impaired his ability to speak.

"We're out here to get them." replies Yon.  "Do you want to join us and help get Julianne back?"
