i'm after something that can be played fairly simply with minis decent enough to paint to my standards.

any suggestions?  i'm after something recent that i can invite a friend over to play (or even cajole the wife into rolling some dice)

There is Descent. It's the most recent heroquest-like. The plastic minis are not very detailed, so you don't have to spend too much time on them. And the rules are very family-friendly :occasion14:

I second "Zombies!" great fun. The rules are so simple I could even play it with my three year old (though only for a short time before he lost patience and started playing around with the figures  :icon_wink:) yet enough to make it interesting.
Ugly figures no matter how good you paint them though but I guess you could use other zombie figs. It's 25 mm "scale" but since the scenery is not exactly realistically proportioned and you put one figure on each square (never more) there's enough room on the squares for 28 mm figures as well.
