Keep em thin, really, really thin. I probably do about 1:4 with distilled water. No mucking about with floor waxes or thinners. I have them so thin that the suspension fluid can't support the metallic flakes so I have to stir it about on the palette for use.

The I put about 4 or 5 layers of Boltgun Metal over a white primer. I use white because it FORCES me to thin metallics. With black metallics go on real easy and I find I don't need to thin them to get good coverage. With white I have to put that many layers on so it doesn't thicken up. (Makes sense to me anyway lol)

Once basecoated I give every thing a good few washes with black, probably about two or three. This is to darken the entire area, I will go over with glazes later to really deepen certain areas.

Then rehighlight with boltgun metal.

I find that doing highlights for metals is better with a 75/25 theory.
Basically you want 75% bright mithril and 25% dark. Or 25% bright and 75% dark. I find this gives more realism. Instead of having the blend stretched over a large area.
(Hard to explain, but kind of makes sense to me lol)

Then just highlighting with Mithril silver, very thin and using the brush to feather out and push the edges for a smooth blend. (This is where brushlicking comes in handy, because I can clear the brush and dilute the paint with saliva very quickly)

Once that is done use very thin black glazes to darken areas. Using a licked brush to pull and push the paint until it is a required area.

Ah cool stuff. Was just a little unsure what you meant by it at first.

I'v never used that type of stuff, just mainly stuck to static grasses.

Not sure I want to put anything on, although a cacti style plant could look cool.
Il leave this one, then have a play about with the next one, when I'v finished painting it.

The 5 Ilyad barbarians (once painted) will all follow the same theme, so there could be a possibility of a larger display base, which I would go a bit more adventurous on regarding basing materials.

O and by the way, if anybody wants any of that metallic tute ramblings translated il try and explain a little better lol

It looks very effective if u use it sparingly, dont grab a cluimp of it and force into place as it looks terrible.  A few strands in a corner or somewhere else discreet really do compliment the fig and its a bit different from the grass and flock people usually use.

A cactus would look well suited, may be a bit fiddly to make but u never know til u try  :icon_w00t:

try some purple and green ink glazes on the metals an dthe re highlight with mithril or eve vallejo metalic medium

I normally use a purple (see my Vargas Metatron is a good example)
But I don't know why I didn't on this one. Probably just due to speed purposes.

I have used VMC metaillic medium, but just for the hotspots. (Forgot to mention that in my tute ramble)

The paint on the rock is quite good. Very natural looking sandstone.

Erm...lets think...

Basecoated the entire base in P3 Menoth White base. Then washed it all with snakebite leather. The did additional washes on the rock with Bestial brown (So the rock and sand get a slightly different colour)
The drybrush lightly with Menoth White Base then Menoth White Highlight.

Bestial brown has a very red tint iv found, especially when thinned.

Okay, this one's really well painted and I've spent days deciding if I should post this or not. To me (and I hope it's just the photograph or the lighting) the colours look a bit faded and seem lacking in shading in general. There's a couple of places on the metals where I would have made it darker and maybe one or two places on the skin (a little bit).

Also she's got "skinhead grey scalp" which implies she's not only been shorn recently but had enough hair there before to keep off the sun's rays. She looks like she's had that hairstyle for a while now so generaly I wouldn't have given her "grey scalp" myself, it just seems a bit inappropriate.

Lovely paintjob 'though (I almost bought a pack of these when Gucky had them but they only previewed one of the models in the pack, photo'd from a bad angle, so I left off nabbing them, also 'cause Ilyad stuff was so damned expensive).

Cheers Balgy. Unfortunately my photography is always slightly off. It always washes out colour a tad. I can get them 95% accurate but never spot on. (I describes this to Toosh over at CMoN aswell, as she picked up the same thing)
All the colours are bolder IRL, the shades are deeper and the highlights shine more. Including on the metals (Although I have never photographed metals well)
I will have her at GDUK this weekend, so if you are there you might see her.

The skinhead thing is interesting, I never really thought about it like that. I just painted it with highlights, the same way as the rest of the flesh.
