Title: Part 15: The Unending Sea
Post by: Balgin Stondraeg on July 08, 2009, 08:30:02 AM
Shadowlands

Passing through the portal, the world fades away into a soft blaze of white mist and silver light. A cold chill passes through our heroes as 'though they have passed through a doorway from a warm room to the cold outside. The silvery mist fades and we find ourselves submerged in deep water. Dull light ripples on the waves overhead and our heroic travellers are rising upwards, bouyed up by spme unseen force.

As their heads break the surface of this strange lifeless ocean, they become aware of the dull brooding twilight sky overhead. No land can be seen in any direction. The sea laps lazily, rising and falling sluggishly with no real sense of direction or current and a low mist hangs upon it's surface. In the sky overhead cloud masses are piled up in almost unattural formations, and yet there is a strange grotesque attraction, almost a beauty, to the shapes they make. A dim eerie glow illuminates the sky with no discernible source. It is not sunlight or starlight, but something inbetween.

After a while the faint lapping can be heard of somthing disturbing the water can be heard and a boat appears in the distance - it's white sail rippling in an unseen wind none present can feel. A figure at the tiller, robed in white, turns her head from side to side as if seeking something, a lantern held in her raised hand. As the boat approaches it sometimes seems to shimmer and become translucent, although that could be the mist.

Raoul instantly recognises this as Wynsar, the ghost woman from his vision. He shudders at the memory of her callous murder and yet in his heart, knows it was not he who did the deed.

"This is so not good." says Raul out loud.  "I'm sure that is the girl in the boat I saw when I became possesed with that vision on the beach."

"This is so not good." says Raul out loud.  "I'm sure that is the girl in the boat I saw when I became possesed with that vision on the beach."

Some of the others might recognise her from her brief appearance in the infirmary but I'll leave that up to them. I wasn't going to let Raoul forget her due to the more personal and emotional link. There's 2 or 3 pictures of her I can post in the player handouts thread too unless you lal want to try to swim away and hide in the mists or something :p.

Al treads water, his hand moving to his weapon a frown apon his face. 'i dont care much for the decore, lets hope the .er day... brightens'

Edited ever so slightly to take into account the fact that he's still in the ocean with everyone else.

I also neglected to mention that this strange sea is also disturbingly dry (so there's no need to go worrying about scrolls and spell books).

"At least it is someone we sort of know, I'm going to swim towards here, see if she will help.  Anyone with me?" asks Raul.

And with that, he starts to swim in the strange, dry ocean.

Ivor looks around confused at his sudden change of location. He looks around for any discernable landmarks.

Or is there any land....?

There is no land in sight.

As Raoul reaches the edge of the boat the woman reaches over. For a sickening moment he thinks she is about to plunge him down beneath the water to drown but she helps him up into the boat. Up close she is certainly the woman from his vision. Green eyes rest in a plain, if not unattractive, face and as he settles in the seat she ushers him to, she turns, dark brown hair blocking his view of her face, to beckon to the others to come aboard.

Raul is dumbstruck for a while, as he also helps the others on board.  Finally he manages to say "Thankyou m'lady.  This might sound like and odd question in the circumstances, but have we met before?"

After helping all aboard, she waits for all to be seated comfortably before speaking somewhat formaly. "I am Wynsar Haldin and I welcome you all aboard my vessel." Turning she begins to tend to the boat, turning it around and heading back the way she came across the motionless dry sea beneath that disturbingly unnatural looking sky.

She's not ignoring people. Just getting the boat going. Feel free to interract with her or each other in any way.

"Of course," having set a course and secured the rudder she takes a seat. "You are on the Unending Sea. From here we shall sail to the Shadowlands. I believe you have an object to recover from there." She looks away over the water in the direction the boat is heading "the shadowlands are a cruel and dreadful place. I wish you luck. I cannot enter there, for were I to do so, I might not have the strength to return but I shall remain here to sail you back to the world of the living once more."

"I'm sorry, Miss. Do I understand you correctly in thinking that your mortal life has come to an end?  Are we in the same condition?" Raul asks nervously.

"Ah no", she replies with a faint half smile, "sailors upon the unending sea are not yet dead. Yes my life has come to an end but in this realm the two may meet. Elves who pass through the Shadowlands may finaly find their resting place in the afterlife. Untill then they are not truly dead. Other races have their own paths to take, and so rarely come here at all."

"Well, I never thought I'd be part of a raid into elf-heaven, but they you go!" replies Raul absently before looking out to see if there is anything to see on the sea.

"Ms Haldin," Rogan begins, looking rather concerned.  "If the Shadowlands are such a terrible place, how do elves with no particular gift for combat or those killed in infancy reach their final rest?  Might we come across some of these unfortunates?"

Alairian listens worriedly.

"My dear dwarf," she states calmly, "I am afraid I have not conversed with any dead elves to discover this matter. I have, for the greater part of my existence in thbe afterlife, been shackled to the isle of Elmardia, or Guardian, as you may know it.

"Now," she continues, "When we reach the shores of the Shadowlands I may not alight from the vessel. I shall, however, await your return, safely to convey you back to the lands of the living once more. Rest now. The journey may take some time and you will need your strength for the troubles that await you."

And with that she turns back to the tiller ocne again.

The journey to the shores of the shadowlands will take about a day. She won't ignore anyone who wishes to speak with her and discuss things during that time so just let me know if there's anything you want to do during the voyage.

"Right, now I see that some of these items are magical. Why don't we let me see if I can identify them. Could someone pass me the apple and the ring first, please"?

Ivor spends couple hours going over the two items, checking and rechecking.

"Hmm - this apple seems to come from a 'Tree of Knowledge' - anyone mind if I keep it? It will help me with my Arcane talents".

"Hmm this ring looks like some form of resitance bonus.... Yes, these small engravings show it to be the Ring of Hailidara, and grants a minor resistance to all things, slightly more if the wearer is specifically targetted..."

Ring Resitance +1, +2 if Spell or Spell Like Ability specifically targets the wearer.

"Ok, now if I keep this Apple, but who handed me the Ring..."?

"OK Ivor, I get it.  I'll swap you the ring for the apple, if that is what you wish!" Raul smiles at Ivor to make it clear he's more than happy to take his smaller companion's advice on these matters.

Ivor tries not to be too obvious as he almost snatches the profferred apple. Then he takes a bite, savouring the magic like a vintage wine....

OOC: How long until the effects take place? If it's immediate, how long we resting for, since I can replenish my spells (and get the new bonus ones)!   :icon_wink:

The boat sails on across the twilit sea. People chat and discuss their upcoming adventure. Ivor examines and identifies some of the objects. Eventualy wariness takes them and the characters all fall asleep. When they awake, they are arriving in the lands of shadow. (http://www.customhobby.com/forum/index.php?topic=2888.0)

Characters may pick new spells as they are fully rested.
