I haven't had a decent roleplaying session in ages :(. It's been almost strictly tabletop stuff for the last two or three years now. There's some PBF's going on but apart from that it all seems to be WarHordes & Urban War in this area :(.

However, if anyone's interested I play AD&D (1st, 2nd & 3rd ed), WFRP, RuneQuest (3rd), and have a lot of other games I simply don't play these days but am willing to pick them up again for a bit of fun (Tunnels & Trolls, Advanced Fighting Fantasy etc). The list's so long it's better if people ask me if I've got something and I say yes or no.

I can't stand Worlds of Darkness stuff 'though, it just doesn't appeal to me (similar sort of experience with Shadowrun too really).

Have played/own pretty much every RPG since the days when Chainmail became D&D....but in terms of what we play, Runequest, AFMBE, Cthulhu and a homegrown rules system are what float our boat these days. Played a D&D campaign solidly for about nine years 'till work intervened. Used to run 3 successful (award winning  :icon_wink:) PBM roleplaying games for several years, and desperately need to find the time to restart at least one of'em  :icon_neutral:

I still play when I can, and recently (wthin the last couple of years) we've played AD&D3, Hackmaster, Star Wars D20, Advanced Fighting Fatasy and Savage Worlds.

In the past, I've played more: D&D, AD&D, AD&D2, Paranoia, WEG Star Wars, Traveller, Palladium, GURPS, Star Trek (FASA), WHFRP, Mechwarrior and more I can't think of right now.

Hopefully, I'll be able to play more when the girls are a bit older ...

Played AD&D, Runequest, call of cthullhu, stormbringer. I was a player in AD&D, GM in the rest. I also collected rules. At tops I had about sixty different rulessystems. Gave them all away to the neighbours twelve year old during a move. I've made a lotofown rulessystems (halffinished all of them) to. These days I play nothing. It's been about fifteen years since I last played.

I still want to finish my own campaign world in which dragons rule over enslaved and genetically modified humans, demons and whatnot brought to them through dimensional gates. Human players start out as slaves of the dragons (genetically unmodified humans are raised in cattlepens as main foodsource for the dragons) and work their way up (hopefully). That's the rulessystem I made most progress in. It was a pretty grim and dark setting. Kind of fantasy postapocalyptic.

Do you have any of the older books saved to PDF's? If you are interested in starting a campaign you could always start one here on the forum.

As a side note we will also be adding a dice roller to the forum as well.

That's the good thing about gaming on a forum, you don't have to be anywhere near the others involved. Maybe if another game gets going (hint hint geronimo :icon_wink: ) you can get in on the fun.

I know the feeling. I am looking forward to the kids being older (not really since things get more complicated), but even more so to retirement.

I like the idea for your campaign setting. If you need more info on Dragons for game mechanics I have a bunch of reference material for that.

I would but I cant guarantee getting online sometimes and would just drag the game slowly I think.  When it comes to cropping time and sorting out my growroom it can take days to do and add that to a busy week means a full week can pass easily without any notable computer usage.  Dont want threatening emails and messages from people waiting on me to whack something :icon_w00t:

Like the sound of that Dragon campaign Bodhi, very imaginitive  :icon_wink:

Unfortunately not, computers were in their infancy when I bought most of those books  :icon_wink:

Somewhere, though, I've got the rulebooks for my own games in word format and have long meant to convert them to pdfs. Sounds like my arm's being twisted into another time-sapping project  :icon_suspicious:

Except I started on it four years before the first matrix movie  :icon_scratch:
Now all text is lost on some old computer or diskette or god knows what. so I'd have to start from memory again form scratch. Which could be a good thing - forcing me to make everything more streamlined.

I'm writing up a little contemporary horrorgame now that I thought I might like to playtest here on the forum once it's done. Anyone know of a good simple rulesystem I could use for it that is free for everyone online to use? Focus would be on roleplaying so the rules need not be more than very sketchy. The d20 system we've used seems a bit to fantasy oriented.

If you have the time, would you mind making up a list of of all the old (before 3rd edition) D&D books that you have? I am always looking to expand my collection of reference material. No arm twisting though :icon_wink: Also take a look at the link I posted there is a lot of D&D, Dragon Magazine, Dungeon Magazine, and d20 material on there.

There are some horror rules, I need to look for them. Also there is the Keys system that Fabian is using for the game we are playing in that seems to work great for encouraging roleplaying (perfect for a forum based game).

I recently discovered the All Flesh Must Be Eaten (AFMBE) system online and ended up buying the rulebooks. It's a very simple and easy storytelling system that'd suit PBF, iirc there are simplified versions of the rules on the main website here http://www.allflesh.com/characters.html

We use a slightly modified version of this to play Cthulhu Now; have replaced dice rolls with card draws from individual decks, and it works very well for fast, exciting combat and task resolution....

At school we played Cyberpunk, Basic D&D then 2E D&D... hmm there were others oh yes Tales from the Floating Vagabond, WEG Star Wars, Fighting Fantasy Dungeoneer (?), Paranoia.

I have played 3E only a small amount ironically.. so playing online suits me as it gives me more time to look stuff up!  :icon_ermm:

Let's write someting here...Ok, so I began with The Call of Cthulhu in 94', and played only this until I went to the university. There I played a lot of things, including Vampire, Mage (I guess it was White Wolf golden age...), and some more obscure things. A little bit tired of Cthulhu, I wanted to DM something more med-fan around 97', and I bought almost all the Earthdawn books. We had a very nice campaign. Later in 2000, our group decided to get involved in D&D with the new edition. We almost played only this, but more rarely because life makes us more and more busy. We had different kinds of games using D&D, and I even tried to run something in the Ravenloft, before turning it into the Oblivion's Blood campaign. Ravenloft is really something difficult to deal with for a DM, although it's definitively my favorite setting. Now I haven't been playing for one year and a half (curiously, it's my daughter's age...), and the last campaign we began was Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil. I have a level 8 fighter/ranger of Red Knight (The biggest character I've ever achieved I think...) who is also an officer of the army of Cormyr. And guess what? Our DM called me yesterday to tell me we would have a game on October the 13th!  :dragon:

There is plenty of room for adventureing in between domain turns. People think you only act as the country but there is regular adventuring in there as well. It really is the best of both.

My problem is i would love to play it! lol I'd love to try my hand at either a wily merchant prince or a mysterious elf lord or lady a la Moorcock.

I am definitely interested in DMing but would have to read up a lot on how to integrate the domain turns with regular adventures... Perhaps something similar to the Pendragon RPG in which PCs have 1 adventure a year. Hmm... yes...  :icon_suspicious:

There are prewritten adventures that could help with figuring that part out. I am also trying to get a DM to run the game on the forum.

Do any of you actually post on gaming forums. If you do please post a DM wanted thread for the game here. I did that on a few sites and hope we can get one.

I might be interested in DMing a game like this, having scanned through the D20 Core Rules from the birthright site, but I'd need to finish my Diorama of Doom first, and have a proper read through the rules.

I think I can see how you could integrate adventures and domain actions rounds, or even war moves, though.  But I'd be happy to be a player in such a game, too, I think :)

Hi

Rather fortunate up here in Gloucester - we have a regular RPG group that meets on Thurs. Got enough players for about two games each week.  Used to play lot more when Balgin used to live here, but now limited to just the one group.

As a player currently playing in two campaigns World Largest Dungeon & Age of Worms, alternating each month. That's in addition to PC games & Balgin's Night Below campaign.

Birthright campaigns are a lot of fun - especially like the strategic element.

Cheers

I've played loads of things in my time but most recently I've been playing d20 Star Wars and D&D 3.5 in the Eberron setting. I'm currently working myself up to run a campaign in Green Ronin's Black Company d20 setting, based on the books by Glen Cook.

Hi

Been playing RPG's since 1991, before that on the Commodore 64/Amiga since 1983.  As far as DnD concerned, only played spellcasters until few months ago.

Got regular group meets Thurs, playing Age of Worms & World's Largest Dungeon on alternative months. Have know Balgin for about 11 years now - (Hi Balgin) - playing Balgin's Night Below campaign.

Also part of RPGA's Living Greyhawk campaign which retires this year.

Cheers

Noone has mentioned any live roleplaying.
I've joined a few. Only eighteen year age limit, alcohol allowed on the premises and postapocalyptic Madmax style ones though. They rock  :icon_twisted:
Oldest participant on the last one I joined was 78. He was the mayor of town in that one. Our group had a bar serving only alcohol (moonshine) and beans. This was also our own only diet for five days. I was the cyborg bouncer and enjoyed being quite vicious and unpleasant all the time. It was freezing cold outside and our bar was the only place that was warm so people came to warm themselves... and got thrown out without mercy by my bouncer after forty seconds without ordering something...
These type of lives are quite different from most fantasy lives I've seen and am not so eager to participate in.

Noone has mentioned any live roleplaying.

I used to have a live roleplaying society based very near by (I could even get there in about an hour or two on my old heavy duty not-designed-for-speed 2nd world war relic of a pushbike). Then they moved to be about 20 miles away and slowly faded out of existance. I had about six years of great live roleplaying experiences (including witnessing a guy with his spell verbals sellotaped to the back of his shield as he'd just started multiclassing or had just started getting spell levels).

One of the guys at our liveroleplay group was Tim Prow (ex White Dwarf team member and now a sculptor for Reaper, apparently he's sculpted a lot for other companies too). He was very agile, very cheeky and very fast.

My best advice for anyone new to live roleplay is this: monster for the first two or three months. Seriously, play monsters. You'll learn the basics of the system faster than if playing a character and you'll also get an idea for which types of characters can do what (to help you work out which rules to use to fulfill the character image that you'd like to realise).

Also we had a Monster Credits system where monsters got a credit for half a day's monstering, 2 credits for a whole day. They could then trade in six credits for half a day's play as a player (which was really great when I was a piss poor teenager who couldn't afford the players fees most of the time).

The system we played was called Shadowlands but when the group moved some changes were made and it became known as Sage's Saga's. I remember staggering out of one encounter where the rest of the party had stood back and let my frothing at the mouth dwarf personaly take on 32 goblins (who attacked in two waves of 16 since we only had 16 monster players that day).

Laughing the GM asked me how many times I'd been hit and I honestly said "one on the right arm, two on the left leg and fifty two on the back." After checking the character sheet he said "that cure light wounds you cast right at the end actualy saved your life there!" So that was 42 damage on the back (out of my 108/54 life, that's 108 total, 54 on all locations to you non live roleplayers). Yep, my armour class was so high I was only taking a point bruise from the single's (10 - my ac meant 1 point minimum).

I did lose my safety xp bonus for the day 'though (for the first time ever) because when I charged the goblins I threw my shield away and it nearly hit the ref.

Oh, once there was an elf quest (where almost every character on the adventure was an elf). This human american indian ranger accompanied them and they kept giving him all the treasure to carry. At lunchtime the elves (being half elementals in that setting) needed to travel to the special elf world plane thing and they forgot to ask the ranger for all the treasure back. He didn't complain :).

Another fun one was after a long morning's adventuring, the ground shook and a dragon emerged (I was it's back right leg). The party of heroes assailed the dragon and it sort of murdered them all, then they found out it was an illussion.

At the end of the afternoon, as evening drew on, the ground shook and the same dragon emerged. The party half lizard paladin walked right up to the dragon's head and said "I disbelieve the illussion". "Okay," said the dragon's head, "quad through," it added as it jabbed him in the chest with the end of the staff symbolising the reach of it's neck.

Okay, all the other locations were doing quins (50-armour) but the head was doing quad through (40 ignoring armour, and most character's total life was in the 120-200 range so that really, really hurt and was almost garaunteed to take out a location on a non fighter type).

The paladin staggered back, crying out in pain and healed himself a lot (but not enough), then the party attacked. I think about a third of them perished, maybe more. Aaah, good times.

There is an A in it if you're playing Live Action Role Play :P  Which is what some of the chaps at university did.  But not me - I was far too busy writing computer programs, drinking beer and playing Traveller or M:TG, not all of which were mutually exclusive

We usually have one LRP a year with my group of friends. That's a way to be all together during a couple of days now that life has made us live more or less far away from each other. We also run a club, OghamGN (GN=LRP in french: Grandeur Nature), and we organized an event in 2006. We'll be organizing another one this year.

You can find some pictures there on our website:

I had my first and only experience of fantasy LRPs when I visited a friend and got taken along to monster for one afternoon game, then got inserted into a game of Vampire in the evening.  It thoroughly bored and embarrassed me, so I resolved not to go again.

Then I got persuaded to attend a Serenity LRP as part of the NPCing crew.  When I walked into a camp that looked like it was out of an episode of Shindig dressed as a Tong enforcer, managed to make a player brick it (in character) by making him realise he'd just asked if a high-ranking member was a classy *****, and later as an NPC captain managed to negotiate a large price for a batch of hooky whisky, I knew I'd found something I could enjoy.

I'm taking my own crew to play this September, so if anyone fancies joining me, just get in touch.  Age of the current players ranges from early twenties to late forties from what I can see, so no need to worry about fitting in.

live as in Larp?

LRP. There's no A word in Live Roleplay. Americans say LARP, we don't. Nobody I ever played with did anyway (and could actualy say live roleplay faster than a lot of americans say larp too :p).

There is an A in it if you're playing Live Action Role Play :P  Which is what some of the chaps at university did.  But not me - I was far too busy writing computer programs, drinking beer and playing Traveller or M:TG, not all of which were mutually exclusive

The ones I've joined have had VERY little "action" as in combat. I prefer it that way. I prefer them when the focus is on ACTING not on "playing war". For playing war (That's fun to by all means) I prefer a decent laserdome or paintball game really. But good live roleplays are all about everybody acting out their parts in a believable manner and the less fighting there is the better I think.
I also participated in a childrens play that was basically this: A large basement filled with various rooms. In the rooms lived different types of troll and goblin characters. Then we let the children in and the improvised theatre interaction could take place. The kids participated in the unfolding of the story. No script. That was great fun. I played a dwarven alchemist (on my knees with legs hidden by a long cape, most of my kneeproblems date from this time, running in stairs each night delivering papers and walking on my knees two hours each day...)
So that was kind of like a Live roleplay to except the children just played as themselves.

if i listed everything i have or would play, then the server would breakdown and we dont want that. :icon_wink:

right now however, im playing blood Bowl, Mordheim, Battle Tech, mechwarrior, Basic D&D, Warhammer, 40K, The black eye, and finally confrontation 3rd edition. no not at the same time, but thats what ive played sinse the end of january :icon_cool:

However as mentioned before, id love to play with you lot here as well.
when something opens up, gimme a PM :icon_wink:

Right then.... well I think we've waited long enough for Alex (who's absence has been rather long) so his character in Dark Awakenings is up for grabs if anyone's interested (although it would involve a lot of backreading, I might just let the game's current players run him as an npc, or do that myself (as I've already been doing)).

I think I might be able to squeeze in one more player for Night Below. What can I say? It's huge. If you'd like to start creating a character for that then let me know what kind of character you'd liek to play and I can help you translate that mental image into rules (if you need any help, that is).

The group are currently in a town called Millbourne and are about to get a good night's sleep and then catch the barge down river to the town of Thurmaster. You could be a local waiting for them there (and I'd fill you in on local information too). Thurmaster's a bit of a poor town (actualy the entirity of Harranshire's a bit run down and impoverished) so if your character doesn't particularly fit in with the local flavour then there's other places I could insert you in too (as a visitor at the local lord's castle or something like that).
