I mean, Who's your Host? My stuff is on Godaddy, but they do not offer the performance that I need for my php-heavy scripting.
I'm currently shopping around, and I'm getting ready to try some others. I checked out Globat, but they only give three mysql databases with their standard hosting package. I don't run a business, so I'm trying not to spend more than $10 a month, but even cheddarmongers uses more than three databases. I could merge them, but I've been afraid to do that, seeing that I"m already having performance problems.
Codewise, cheddarmongers uses Drupal as a CMS, plus webcal for a calendar and gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com) -- I have it all integrated, going for a seamless user experience.
I currently use www.Globat.com for hosting and www.networksolutions.com for some of their products.
Dave how many mysql databases do you need? I am currently thinking of upgrading my plan so I might be able to help.
I'm actually gonna try merging my databases and doing performance testing. I have a test server at home, and I'll put them online on a test domain when I'm happy with the functionality. Right now, I'm using about seven databases among my two domains, but I may be able to trim it to 2 or 3.
Have some space on AOL http://hometown.aol.co.uk/manicinc/page1.html need toget round to putting some stuff on there... :icon_redface:
Aol can be a bit of bother to use but might work if i linked the pictures to ones i post on photobucket.
Bah... globat uses mysql 4 dot something, and I have no idea what version of php they're using because they don't say in their FAQ.
I might give it a try anyway...
Mike -- feel like putting up a phpinfo page where I can see what they're running? Its easy -- just create a new blank web page, name it phpinfo.php and put the following code in it:
<?php
phpinfo()
?>
then post a link to that page. It will return something like this:
http://www.cheddarmongers.org/phpinfo.php
I will send it to outlaw. He does all the work on the website. Also in the meantime (if you want the answer right now) you can contact their tech support and do a live chat with them or call them.
I got the info I was looking for from globat:
http://www.globat.com/miscellaneous/softver.htm
So, I'm a little worried that they're still on php 4 and that they don't have mysqli support, but its worth a try.
I was able to merge all of my databases together, so Cheddarmongers is running on only one database right now.
I'll set up my dev environment at home to use their versions of php and mysql and see if I can move the site. My performance has been ghastly.
I hope it all works out well for you. If you do switch let them know I referred you :icon_wink:
yep, I saw that. Will do.
http://www.1and1.co.uk is my host
Crud. I signed up for an account on globat, and the performance seems a touch worse than godaddy. In addition, their servers are at way lower revs; apache 1.2, mysql 4.0, php 4.3. My test gallery site runs even slower, and I can't even get my CMS to install. It took me four hours to upload 30 megs worth of pictures. Ugh.
test site: www.cheddarmongers.com/gallery2
I'll see if their tech support can sort it out, but theres a few other features missing, like advanced dns control, and some command interpreter settings aren't behaving how I'd expect.
:violent4:
Damn Dave I am sorry to hear you are having problems. Contact tech support and see what they can do to help.
Okay, I figured it out. Then made a mess. Its hard to upload stuff across my work network! So look for updates tomorrow.
I edited my php.ini and .htaccess files, and figured out where most of my problems were.
When I get my dev stuff uploaded, I'll be looking for a bunch of wannabe-cheddarmongers to stress-test the site!
Well we have fifty members and then there is everyone else on the FOD. I am sure you won't have a problem finding people. I have plenty of pics that I can post on there for ya.
Might as well become a full member... :sad1:
huh?
I'm an honorary Cheddarmonger remember. :cm
Ohhhh yeah, I did know that! I need a Homer "Doh!" smiley
Dave let us know how things have been going?
cheddarmongers.com is up and running at a basic level. Still working on getting the gallery to work, then I'll add more functionality.
grumblegrumble...
I finally got my CMS and my Gallery working, but I can't embed the gallery into the CMS. Still mucking along...
test site is http://www.cheddarmongers.com and the test gallery is at http://www.cheddarmongers.com/gallery2
Maybe I need help from :sith:
gallery takes forever to come up....
internal server error when clicking on photos in your monster section too mate
Aaarrrggg!!!
I'm playing with server settings. that internal server error should be gone by now.
As for performance; that's my primary reason for testing this site out. I have it set up to cache pages, so the more people use it, the faster it will get. Thats the theory, anyway!
I will give it a go in a bit. Once I do I will try and go over all of the pages.
grumble grumble
What took me all week mucking with Globat took me about two hours on godaddy, and everything works. Mostly. At some point, I'm gonna give a serious go at url rewrite, or "clean urls."
I'll work on refining access permissions and opening up lots of features, then I'll work on the theme. That generic theme is pretty boring.
Sorry it didn't work with Gloabt. Was their tech support any help to you?
Alrightee -- I finally found a host that is looking good.
Please swing over to http://www.cheddartest.org/prod and let me know what you think. This is a copy of the site as of last night. Cheddarchat is not on the new site for now...
