Title: New Work-from Rough to finished
Post by: Baldemyr on January 23, 2007, 01:01:43 PM
Ok.  I got a new contract for a Conan/Carter fansite.

The first picture Im contracted to do is some large Arab bandit king.  The description was given so the first step was a rough scetch meant to show proportion and enough identifying bits for the client.

Here are some other roughs im working through right now

Finally there is this one...This would be about half way through a picture-  I never got around to finishing him yet do to the fact i have no clue what is going to be happening elsewhere in the picture in terms of placement

Nice work.

The Arab reminds me of John Rhys Davies ATM

God I wish I had time to draw still

Nudity is fine as long as it is tasteful/artistic.

I like the pic. Keep us posted on your work. I like your artwork!

your stuff reminds me of the Mark Gibbons Gw stuff and the early adrian smith artwork for chaosy stuff.  you have a very good 'heavy' quality to your drawing.

Mark Gibbons was my favorite artist-tied with Keith Parkinson (his women <drool>), Loius Royo and Larry Elmore.

Can't see nudeness. :icon_sad:

I this issue with Photobucket has arose before? I recall someone complaining about how their naked minis were taken off the site, and Photobucket replied, saying that only paper based art was allowed. Well, this IS paper based art and it's been taken down? :icon_evil:

She's stunning!  Very nice!

Thanks for posting her on Cheddarmongers.

You'll notice that even though pictures get resized, the full size is still available, there's a size link on the top right corner above the picture.  You can even crop thumbnails when updating pictures.  I have my site set to override thumbnail shape and crop to square for a unified site.  I hope you don't mind I cropped a thumbnail for you.  The first picture is too big for the software to handle a thumbnail crop, but you can also upload a custom thumbnail.

Also, once you post a picture, you can hit the "get item urls" link on the left, and it will give you handy html and bbcode to paste into websites and forums, such as a handy thumbnail with link to picture like so:

Ive been compared to Elmore before (even by Elmore at the 2005 Gencon Indy lol) and I certainly wont get insulted.  My favorite artists are Larry Elmore, Mark Givens and Keith Parkinson.  Plus some Frank Miller/Simon Bisley thrown in for flavour :)

Someday, when im sickeningly rich and have legions of fans willing to throw themselves from buildings for me (if you are gonna go big and evil, go Thulsa Doom big and evil), I want to have a miniature made of this woman.  While the cropping the picture to fit seemed to do something odd to the line of her face on the left side(it isnt like that in a larger Photoshop version), she comes across as something really special to me.

I always pictured her in front of a large open window with some form of cloud city behind her- a priestess summoning the viewer through his dreams to her aid.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your art!  You're welcome to post as much as you like on Cheddarmongers...  I'll let you know if we have capacity issues with the larger images...

I have a bunch of fantasy art books, to help me when I'm stuck while painting a mini.  2d techniques are very similar to mini painting techniques.

So, do you have any interest in scribbling up a simple Cheddarmongers banner??  :cm

I think it's likely that you can get her quite cheap if you turn to amateur sculptors in need of practice. We're allways on the lookout for good concepts and some might even do one for free if aproached by an artist. Not one for me though. I positively HATE Larry Elmore and company. Well done but lifeless and with far to many female bimbos for my taste. Frazetta also has sexy ladies (which I do of course like) but he gives them a sense of power and believability as warriors. Larry Elmore just makes them look like Playboy models in fantasy suits.

But you are a great artist, no doubt about it. It's just a matter of tastes here

Seriously:I have been convinced to like artists I didn't previously like before and it is allways a refreshing experience.
Title: Re: New Work-from Rough to finished
Post by: Baldemyr on April 10, 2007, 01:19:54 PM
Well my problem is with the idea Frazetta makes them somehow more realistic as warriors-no.  He REALLY REALLY doesnt.  Short, big breasted, wide hipped and with a cool feral looks in their eyes.  Add a big cat and VOILA.  A Frezetta pinup is born.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e49/admeralsarms/frank_frazetta_egyptianqueen.jpg

Frazetta is a phenomenal artist.  He is the artist that so many-including Elmore and Parkinson- draw their inspiration from.  His work on the Conan fables, and on the Tarzan stuff...and on fantasy in general is what set the stage for all fantasy art since.

That includes some of the familiar concepts all artists now deal with.  One of the best (other then the iconographic strength of Deathdealer) known of course is...ironically...female bimbos.(although pinup art is farrr older then that.  the instant a heterosexual male discovered he could leave marks on things, the first big boobed/assed pinup was born)
It wasnt Robert Howard that developed what we think of as heroic fantasy-Conan only exists because of the art that depicts him.  That art contains the female with little ability to fight being protected-to the death- by the hero(some exceptions do occur..like Belit).  Larry Elmore and K Parkinson were in fact following Frazettas pattern as they developed their own art.  Hell, i doubt any artist out there in the fantasy field doesnt see Frazetta as an inspiration.

http://images.google.ca/images?svnum=10&hl=en&gbv=2&safe=off&q=Keith+Parkinson

Parkinsons work contains all sorts of things-including movement and dynamism, static shots of pinups and everything else.  However his technical illustration abilities go way beyond Frazettas-  the problem is you sometimes get locked into the lines too closely when you have a technical background...so looking at Frazettas priestess above there is a flow to it that isnt as common in most artists (including myself...who frankly sucks at flows).   Instead of a murky fantasy world of greys, browns and mild greens-you see a world jump to life.  He paints as realistically as possible...and the cover he did for the Everquest Game is absolutely stunning in its detailwork-  I cant find a good version off the first gamecover he did-but here is the one he did for EQs add on  -FIX FIX -I discovered the initial cover art was done by Larry Elmore lol.

  http://www.artnews.cz/obrazky/galerie06/200610272212_obr%203%20Everquest.jpg

An artist must make you want to become a part of the picture in my opinion.  Look at that cover-that lizard is begging for you to show how manly you are and rescue her.  His work takes you inside.  it makes you curous about what else is going on.

  http://www.atemporel.com/images/parkinson/parkinson_north_watch.jpg

No girl here, instead we share the vastness of a cold north with this fellow.  The pictures setup is its dynamism(instead of a sword weilding dude hopping around) with your eye following the direction Parkinson desired.   The vast open spaces compared to the ranger and mounts triangular shape make your eyes move-and let you feel the sense of distance and loneliness.

http://www.steamfantasy.it/gallerie_artisti/elmore/1/larry_elmore_dragonknights.jpg

Here we have Elmores work.  Enough movement, the wings of course driving your eyes towards the figure on top.  Both artists are in love with the vastness of a fantasy world (as am I-i dont think Frazetta was-seem more claustraphobic to me) as opposed to the nitty gritty of ugly hand to hand combat. Heck-this looks like it could be contemporary to Frazetta (except for the different dates :) )

All three of these people are wonderful artists....but what must be understood is that when they draw pinup art, they draw pinup art.  Period.  Frazettas women are no more beleivable as warriors then Elmores or Parkinsons.  Frazettas women are simply an older style of pinup girl.  The big breasted and hipped thing isnt in fashion now...so Elmore et al tend not to draw them(ironically, I do.  The women I draw tend to come from veeeerry old pinups or nude shots.....not the athletic little pinups with fake boobs of today-Earth mothers all the way. However its rather difficult to find model material in todays world unless you can afford to hire a live model).  None of these artists wanted to be grounded in reality- and all of them painted women in combat that shouldnt have been.  While opinion is perfectly valid-especially yours with your grasp of 3dspace- the idea that Frazetta did anything but print big breasted bimbos just isnt correct.  Frazettas work is grogeous IMO for just that reason-the femenine qualities of his women(and the masculine qualities of his men).  His women are no more realistic in their depictions then Elmores.  Nearly naked, little muscle, bigger breasted, bigger hipped and armed to the teeth.  Oh plus they have a cat.

Title: Re: New Work-from Rough to finished

I choose Frazetta as comparison exactly BECAUSE he draws pinup art as well. What makes them different -in my opinion - is probably the "flow" you mentioned which I think lacks in far to many modern day fantasy artists. That flow makes a bigbreasted Bimbo (even with a cat  ;)) look dynamic and believable despite having no believable warrior features in her anatomical set up. Among miniature sculptors of today I think Kev White captures this spirit perfectly whereas the "Elmor masterworks" figures  -despite being technically brilliant - just don't. You get a feeling of posing and THAT - not the size of hips and tits - makes them undelievable in my eyes.

Bungle-  I use that side for the models for some of my scetches

As for Bodhi,  understood.    I actually prefer iconagraphic poses-solid ones.  So for example. Wyrd minis dont appeal to me..no matter how well drawn and crafted they are. (the artist for them is amazing btw)

How did I guess? LOL

Naked women in poses possibly usable for drawing and sculpts.... I can see why Kev finds inspiration so hard.

believeable women fighters?  BELIEVEABLE!! very hard to do... those swords are heady.. I'm don't have enough muscle mass to confortably wield a melee weapin  for a long time.. let along the average modern woman.

best thing would be the classic farmers daughter... used to hard physical work...

There are PLENTY of good reference sites for nude females (and males) out there that are of a totally nonpornographic nature. Just search for artist reference pics and you'll turn up loads of the stuff.
And again Baldemyr. Please understand that I really like your work. It's probably just that I like impressionistic styles more than photorealism. One of my favourite more modern fantasy artists is that guy who made all those discworld covers (I can never remember his name) and he draws in an almost cartoony style more than anything else. My favourite artist all 'round is probably Van Gogh or Gaugain. Not very photorealistic either  ;)

There are actually more and more sites of non-enhanced females- in simple old style nudes appearing on the net...and as an artist that cant afford 40-100 bucks an hour, its a blessing.

Problem is, many of the women are a more modern image of beauty..which is far skinnier and ribbier.

My figure reference manuals (bought 20 years ago) contain "average" looking people.

I will admit that life classes stopped around that time too.

I kept them up but found the women<and men> either bone-wraith skinny(one girl I actually took on a date after....you could see her ribs FROM HER BACK-see the bones in her shoulders slide across and everything) or incredibly hugely fat.

I've never had any life drawing classes. Been on the other side (as the model) quite a few times though  ;). I had it as main occupation from age 20 until age 23 or so. Being an anatomy model is a bizarre kind of work and quite strenous for the body. Try standing still for a 48 hour sculpting session (in forty minute intervals and short breaks in between) and you'll see what I mean.
You catch up a bit about anatomy through modelling as well  ;)

I thought that was the idea.. 3 types of models

1. Skinny for skeletal bone structure
2. chubby for Rubenesque rounded shapes
3. Toned to draw muscles

now which one was Bodhi? :icon_suspicious:

1 or 3 I would think

Honestly..you could be right and it was "desired" but-frankly I wanted more muscle or more curves for what i was doing.  I mean, life drawing is ALWAYS good but- I look at my old work and frankly its all garbage in terms off a rough for a proper picture.  I would need to rework the bodies too much.  I ended up using body building magazines and Playboy....

Thanks for those links guys too. Reference is never bad to have. Got more female inspiration sites then male though. I love to have some sites bookmarked that don't overrun my computer with pop ups when i open them. And i'm talking about nudes here, male, female, thick, thin, caucasian (sp?) dark skinned whatever. I don't just need the perfectly toned female ones. Those are easiest to draw anyway and easy to find... so i'd like some variation.

Lovely armor detail but the face has some classical "quarter profile mistakes".  Same ones I allways do so I'm afraid I can't dissect them. I just see (as with my own drawings) that something looks slightly "off". And aren't the breasts hanging quite a bit to low? The way they are placed now it looks as if they hang on the lower edge of the ribcage.
I have done this mistake with sculptures and what I've done was simply to make a cut at the overlong upper end and then lower the whole thing (head and neck and shoulders) to apropriate height. Unsure how one would go about it with a drawing though. In a program like paint shop pro or something similar one could use quite the same technique I guess.

Andrew in the thread I had posted about the Devil Asmodeus would you be willing to do a rough sketch of him based on the description that is given in there (as well as the few reference photos posted)? there is a particular demon/devil I would like for you to do for me but I need to nail down the description before I move forward with that.

I was thinking that discfreaks would be great exposure for you because they often do projects for gaming that include a ton of text (just check out their Gates Of Hell PDF's) but they don't have any artwork in them. They have written an entire book and created some great background FLuff for all of hell but there are no illustrations anywhere in it.  They are a community of gamers and not a company trying to put out a product, but I know a lot of people view their work and it would be great "free press" so to speak.

I was also wondering, have you ever done a dragon? I would love to get a great rendition of Tiamat and also Bahamut from you. *Bahamut, Tiamat, and the Demon concepts are all for me.

Ok...here is the finished steam armour (badly scanned-better scan coming) and a pinup-which will also be better scanned.  Both are on massive sheets of paper and I only have a little scanner.  Stiching isnt really viable due to location of scanner.

Nice work! Were these done by hand?

Yes of course.

My friends, my girl and myself were all sitting around trying to come up with how I could afford a 2007 Charger R/T and we settled on "Do tons of pinup art".  The idea is-I will do 1 to 2 a week until I have a pile and then use some of the artsites online to sell them for a down payment :)

A lot of the pinups I see online are absolute garbage-or lifeless-or strangely pedophilic in nature.  Since the only other pinup I did got bought out in about 17 seconds flat-im hoping I can build a market for them.

The Steam Powered Armour will be fully scanned-and im hoping on having a few prints for sale in June for the con :) .

Well, I got my new PC.  I still need to get PS installed and running again.  The machine is a Quad Core Dell 730 with 4gb of Ram, 500 gigs HD space and a Nvidia 9800 GX2 card. Its monsterous.

This beast is 8 inches taller and longer and 3 inches wider then any PC ive owned.  Its chassis is constructed from Brushed Aluminum with black metal and plastic inserts and weighs in at over twice the weight of my last PC.  It feels like im playing Warcraft on a Delorean :)

Nope nope.  I had a choice-but decided on Dell.  Same company...same PCs....75 the cost.
