Title: Speedpaints -- a pair of Harlequin warriors
Post by: cheddarmonger on March 28, 2007, 07:15:19 AM
So...  I was getting frustrated at my paintjob on Bunny Boiler Alice, and not satisfied with my Hellbeast, so I felt like picking up something fun.  These two were on my painting table:

The skinclad guy was gonna sacrifice his feet to Zombie Thrud, but he lucked out:

This handsome fellow in braids sacrificed his axe blade to Zombie Thrud, but I found a replacement blade for him that looked suitable so he's no longer just pointing with a stick:

I painted these guys up over three days.  I'm not in Matt's speed painting league, but I think I did okay here.

Veery nice, how long did they take you in total? Takes me 2-3 hours to finish something plus an hour or so of tweaking after I've taken a pic which shows anything that I've missed.

I think the second guy could do with a bit more work on the red cloth but overall really good, skin tones are great.

I'd say about 6 hrs or so...

Thanks!  He won't get tweaking, I'll spend the time on other stuff.  I got a little extra snow on their feet, so I'll wash that off, but otherwise they're done.

Incidentally, I got these in trade from Wristy -- Thanks for the awesome pile of warriors!

I was just about to ask if they were from me as i could remember having extra one's.

Great work Cheddar, it helps when you can get into the figure and just let yourself go.  :icon_razz:

Yep, theres a bunch of winners in that pile.  They are great practice for skin tones, and also I'll follow Gi6ers' advice (I think it was you!), and speedpaint something when I have a painter's block.  Maybe I'll see the bottom of my leadpile in my lifetime...

Question -- which do you think came out better?  I prefer #2.

I must say I prefer #2 as well, but they're both excellent.

I think I'm getting overloaded too many pics of mini guys in thongs over the last couple of weeks; and that is just the mini forums I read!  :icon_eek:

Yeah numero two for me as well

6 hours?  speed painting?  I thought speed painting was an hour or so per fig?  I have never spent more than 3 hours painting a figure but I guess that shows lol  Are drying times included in those 6 hours?

yep, drying time, brewing cups of tea, nl2 assembly...  basically, they were finished over the course of three 2 hr painting sessions, in between doing other stuff.  Yeah, I guess 6 hr speed painting does sound kinda funny.

I used to be a member of the Army Painting Yahoo group but got annoyed with some of the people there so left.  They ran contests and you had to submit a squad that only took 1 hour to paint and some of the results were great, Lee Burton did some excellent Imperial Guard figs.  Its surprising how quick you can paint if you take away thinking time, coffee breaks, smoke breaks and drying time etc.  The 1 hour was solely for brush work, dont think it included basing time either so you could do that seperately.  It did help me in my speed as you realise that it doesnt take that long to actually paint a fig, its the arsing about inbetween.  This really helped motivate me to paint in general as it doesnt seem such a daunting task when you think its just an hour of brushwork.

But, seeing as I dont paint squads and every figure is an individual for me, it wasnt the right place for me anyway.

I know thats completely off topic but it gets back to how long do you actually spend on them.  3 x 2hr sessions but doing other stuff as well, would 1.5-2 hours be about right for actual working time on the fig?  If so I am very jealous as my 3 hour fig isnt half as good as that one !!!!

I clipped their tags off before even painting them!

And I kept the tags.  The first one just says Harlequin.  The second says "Easterling" on one side, and "D. Edwards" on the other.
