Title: Next Competition
Post by: Bungle on March 18, 2007, 01:59:25 PM
OK.. any thoughts on the mini for the next competition?

Is there a Spyglass figure not everyone has done yet?

Dot?  Scarecrows?  I wouldn't mind painting another Bud the Zombie, that's a fun one.

Lets see what Steve thinks. Does Andy have any spyglass figures in stock?

don't think so, that section has gone from the site as far as I can see...

Matt I posted the prize in the Alien comp thread.

I guess we can always talk to Steve about it or just wait until he gets Spyglass up and running again. It would be a nice way to get the word out that he is back when he is ready.

For now I think I want to do a sculpting competition next. I am not sure but have been thinking about it.

Not there now. With luck it means Steve will be up and running himself soon.

I have some Frankies and lab crew on order..... along with the tunnel guard and some ghouls  :icon_suspicious:

I have an idea for Dot too.

Do a pole for what type of comp to do next and ask people to only vote if they are going to join in the comp.

Good idea.... if its sculpting the best I could do is a conversion, or a 15mm sci fi vehicle.

The Heresy Spider, I've not seen many of these done, plus it looks a bit of work to put together, make it a bit more challenging. :icon_w00t:
Title: Re: Next Competition

I was going to recommend a sculpting competition but I don't think it would be fair to those who don't feel upto the challenge... so I would suggest a non-sci-fi miniature for painting this time.  Either one of the HF libbys or a Heresy Boris if we can't get any spyglass.  If Spyglass is available I would recommend Dot.

For the record, I don't collect Fantasy but would be willing to give it a go for the competition.

Or we could open it up to non-FOD....perhaps suggest a theme and choose a mini that you feel sums it up.

With 300 doing the run's what about a "Greek" theme to it.
Figure from real Greek history or Grek myth and you can convert a figure for it as well.
Title: Re: Next Competition

A theme is a good idea - I like Ancient Greece, or maybe to continue with the Libby idea - Women Warriors.

Yes oh yes!  :blob3: :blob3: Couldn't we have one where both sculpts and painted figures would be fair entries? It's not fair to us nonpainters to have a painting competition  :icon_whistling:
Title: Re: Next Competition

How about one where entry level is a conversion and the pro's do full sculpts?

Oh and I will have my first 4 miniatures released sometime soon (working out a few details).

Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: Dr.Evil on March 18, 2007, 07:22:18 PM
Like CH said have this one for conversion and full sculpts and you can prime them if you want to but conversions must have a before and after picture to show what work was all done to it.

Simple they can be entered painted unpainted and unbased as well.
You have best sculpted\converted, best painted and best based.
You would have to choose which category to vote in for each entry as you can only vote one for an entry and you can vote for three entry's.
Does that make sense...  :icon_scratch:

Title: Re: Next Competition

There definitely needs to be a theme in that case otherwise it would be very very hard to judge.

Hi guys, sorry I've not replied to this thread sooner but I've been a bit pre-occupied with sorting out health issues (unsuccessfully) and missed it entirely.

Anyway, I'm not really in any position to sell any figs right now as stocks are low and I'm not conveniently available for mail order. However...

The suggestions of zO figs or Bud the zombie are ideal. Andy at Heresy has put the zO figures (Dot, Scarecrows and Munchkins) into production himself. I just spoke to him on the phone and he's going to get them put back on the online store ASAP. So, if you wanted to base this contest off a Spyglass figure, they can be ordered via Andy as of...well any day now.

Personally, I would really like to see you guys having a crack at one of the zO figs as I don't get to see many paintjobs on my sculpts these days. Since I stopped sculpting my name seems to have fallen off the map a little.

Anyway, that's the situation. All up to you, but the zO option wouldn't be a problem.

Hey guys sounds like Spyglass it is to me. We just need to settle on which zO figure. Let me know which ones you like.

I hope you feel better soon Steve. As always please let us know if there is ever anything we can do to help.
Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: cheddarmonger on March 20, 2007, 11:18:29 AM
Wristy has already done the munchkins, I'm leaning towards the scarecrows.  I love those sculpts, just haven't painted them yet!  I'd like to paint Dot, too, but I'm not good enough to paint something that fine just yet to a competitive standard.

Title: Re: Next Competition

Nice to hear from you Steve.

Munchkins I have somewhere.. with a plan for painting and I need more... (a full unit of the little blighters).... but I have seen lots of painted Munchkins so doing something original will be hard.

Dot.. I haven't seen many painted versions of her.... and a chance to do human skin in a comp but not too much. Also converion potential.

Scarecrow.. more fantasy orientated, no flesh....

Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: Custom_Hobby on March 20, 2007, 01:40:22 PM
We could do a scene and incorporate a few of the figures
Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: gi6ers on March 20, 2007, 01:55:34 PM
I think that would scare people off IMO...cost and time wise and you couldn't use it for gaming..
Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: Bungle on March 20, 2007, 02:06:09 PM
But it could be an option if you wish...... :icon_suspicious:
Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: Custom_Hobby on March 20, 2007, 02:21:28 PM
I think options are good and minimum of one figure to enter the painting comp. How does that sound?

That way if people choose to do multiple figures then Steve gets a little more exposure.
Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: SteveB on March 20, 2007, 02:44:36 PM
Could just say zO figures as a theme. That's narrowed down to 6 figures automatically. Then they can do a single or a diorama or whatever...
Title: Re: Next Competition

Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: cheddarmonger on March 20, 2007, 02:53:59 PM
Thats a great idea!  Also wide open for dioramas!
Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: Inso on March 20, 2007, 03:45:29 PM
I'd only be up for painting a single miniature (I'm one of those who would be scared off by dioramas  :icon_sad:), but I may be swayed by a group of little munchkins.

The trouble with having single/diorama entries is how they would be compared.  I think that there would need to be different categories for judging, otherwise single minis would lose out (in my opinion).
Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: cheddarmonger on March 20, 2007, 03:50:57 PM
:sign5:

yeah, there would have to be categories.  I just don't think we'd have enough entries to pit dioramas against singlybased gaming pieces.
Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: Custom_Hobby on March 20, 2007, 03:58:40 PM
I would thank the dioramas would be the hardest because you would have to paint all of the figures to the same high standard. One figure can detract from the entire scene. We have plenty of time though and there may be room for multiple categories within the zO range for the comp. The discussion is going well so we will see where it goes....

I would love to see inso do a little troop of muchkins
Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: Dr.Evil on March 20, 2007, 06:13:43 PM
The way gi6ers paint's he would have an army painted by the end of the comp.  :icon_razz:

I have scarecrows and munchkins unpainted but no Dot, it didn't grab me...  :icon_neutral:

Can you use other figure's in the diorama's or just ZO one's.
Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: Custom_Hobby on March 20, 2007, 06:34:25 PM
Lets just stick with zO figures (unless you want to sculpt or heavily convert something). I just think it would be nice to focus on Steve for a bit.

And the way Matt paints me might have his entry finished already.

Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: Custom_Hobby on March 20, 2007, 06:42:41 PM
I really don't care either way the more that I think about it. If it makes the scene work better then go ahead but the focus should be zO figures. Sort of like the way they did the DOD entries.
Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: cheddarmonger on March 20, 2007, 08:38:45 PM
Kinda like Iron Chef.  Scored on how it showcases the secret ingredient.  Or the secret miniature.  Well, not exactly secret, but you get the idea.
Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: Inso on March 22, 2007, 09:10:27 AM
How about if we use ANY of the zO figures, with ANY other miniatures AS LONG AS there are more zO than others.  The only exception being a one-on-one duel.

That way Spyglass gets the lion share of attention and we get to use what ever figures we like along with the zO ones.

Also, categories with a fairly small competition is probably a waste of time.  Lets just go for the 'open' competition and have all comers against everyone else (this coming from the one who suggested categories  :icon_scratch:).  If we play in a friendly way, there's no need to gategorise entries...it's the taking part, not the winning.

I think the NO POSTING WIPs rule should stay as well, that way it's more of a surprise when the entry pix get posted.

When is it likely to be?  Soon?

How about score by polling, 1st, 2nd, and 1 random among those that didn't place!!  That way, folks are encouraged to particpate regardless of skill level.

Yes, mine too  :icon_cool:.

While I was there I bought my first Heresy stuff as well...lurkers and a Dwarf inventor (not for the competition...just to see what they were like) :icon_twisted:.

That's one of the good things about these little compies...they get you choosing miniatures that you wouldn't necessarily choose normally  :icon_razz:.

Good choice there Inso! I think the dwarf was one of my first minis from their and the options are great.

Might have to get another one at some point.

This is from a couple of years ago (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v655/Gi6ers/?action=view&current=HeresyDwarfpan.jpg)
Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: Bungle on March 22, 2007, 03:29:41 PM
The dwarf was mine too.. quickly followed by the ogre with table.

I used them for a mordheim gang.. thespians fallen on hard times.

The ogre was the scenery shifter (hence the table)

The dwarf was the lighting rigger and fly posterer.

I used an foundry elizabethan woman with face carved off and replace by a bearded GW plastic face, and two plastic big muscled arms holding a two handed sword as the leading lady  Eddy   (he's 'ard)

and a plasctic GW figure with feather from a hat as a quill pen and a sculpted rapier as William Shovestaff.

Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: Bungle on March 22, 2007, 05:23:08 PM
Why not do the sculpting comp first?

and then run the painting comp to finish a month later
Title: Re: Next Competition
Post by: Inso on March 22, 2007, 05:29:16 PM
A sculpting competition would need to run for a decent time.  I would need a good month or so.  Maybe decide on a sculpting subject, get the comp. started and while it's going on, run the painting comp.

With a sculpting comp, I would suggest loose themes like 'thief' or 'fighter' or some such, that way you can get any genre covered and include more sculptors (I wouldn't sculpt fantasy...it holds no interest for me).

With everything that is going on here, this Forum should be called 'The Custom Competition Hobby Forum'  :icon_w00t:.

My order arrived today  :icon_w00t:...Less than a day from order to arrival...awesome  :icon_razz:.

We need to get deciding on what the rules are before I start making the wrong sort of entry  :icon_scratch:.

On a different note, the Dwarf inventor is great...He has 6 arms!  He will make a great Sci-fi mechanic (Wristy's suggestion, by the way).  The Lurkers are also cool, different head choices and very dynamic...I'm a bit of a Heresy convert (although it would take a LOT more than a few lurkers to shake my obsession with Grymn  :icon_twisted:).

The zO minis I got were also very nice and they will look great on my planned diorama.

Got some tips on digestive dipping techniques. The problem would either have a) with the angle of dipping to do b) with the temperature and humidity of the dipping agent to do or c) with the timing of the dipping process as such to do. It's hard to tell but if you provided pictures and perhaps a simple diagram of the dipping process in this particular instance I should be able to sort the problem for you and ensure you have a non-breaking dipping experience the next time you hazard a try. Should I post the tutorial in the tutorial section? With pictures?
Should we - in fact - make this the next contest?

I shall refine my technique before posting diagrams and pics, there is also the factor of how quick your hand to mouth action is.  Dunking biccies when naked seems to speed it up, biscuit burns can be a terrible thing of course.
