Any tutorials on doing Balrogs/lava rock monsters out there?

I have to search but I think there was a tutorial for painting the GW Balrog.
Or do you mean making one?

Personally I would prime white, wash with yellow, then yellow/orange brybrush leaving your initial yellow in the very deepest recesses, then orange up to red. Then heavy overbrush of black followed by highlight drybrush of very dark grey then a light drybrush of lighter grey. If you are feeling adventurous dry brush yellow up to orange out of the cracks to give a cool glowing/OSL effect.
Tamiya clear yellow as a very thin wash to tie the bright bits together works well too.
Otherwise base coat the recesses with a dark red and was in the lighter colours, so red then orange then a thin final wash of yellow then add your darker colours as above.

Cheers.. thats sort of what I was thinking (Except multiple washes of colour)... but just wanted to see if there were any other super tricks people had used.

I saw some lava monsters recently on the LAF and saved for myself what they said they'd done:

to much yellow and not enough white and orange in the crevaces, i also think that you should add some dark grey to the black just a bit at the edges to help define the cooled parts. also i think the yellow is looking a bit chalky in the pic so you might want to try thinner layers of paint or a bit of gloss med .

I also think that if you painted the dark bits dark down and them "highlighted" them with black, you'd get a good effect. Well, that is what I'm going to do when I get to painting mine (eventually!)
finally got some more glue so I can try to pin the legs on......
you know a friend of mine experimented with a very deep metalic black as the cooled rock, its worth looking into keeper.

not sure why that is as all the yellow is ink.
A lot of drybrushing on this and i think it's led to it being a bit untidy overall, i'll know better for next time.

Thanks Hawkmoon, I might give that a go. I was inspired by Al, so on Friday evening I assembled and undercoated my Lava Rock Monster :icon_smile: Hopefully it won't be too long before it gets a proper coat of paint, now!
Any paint on it yet?
Yeah - finished painting mine, except he needs a touch of white deep in his mouth. I hope to have him based and photographed later this week.
@Hawkins: I didn't go for the metallic bits in the end. I was going to, but by the time I'd finished the black, I really like the look of him without it! :)
