Title: Wooden display bases
Post by: Bungle on February 25, 2007, 11:32:02 AM
I popped along to a modelling show in Crewe today.

Loads of very nicely made model kits, great paintjobs. The fantasy figures that folks show on here knocked spots of the competition entries in the fantasy category.

Right back to the subject of this post, I found a guy selling turned or profiled wooden bases.. or even just cubes of polished wood. All sorts of sizes and shapes the smallest was around 25mm diameter at the top of a pedestal. Sadly the guy doesn't have a website but his prices ranged from £4 to £12 all for polished wood, nice grain. natural colours from light ash to red sepelia or mahogany.

If the prices are good and anyone wants some.. he works from his garden shed about 5 miles from where I live.

I can PM anyone his address and phone number as he is not on line.

has anyone got any links to other manufacturers of display bases?

This sort of thing

Invite them to join the forum and post their stuff. They have some nice bases and should make sure they get an internet presence.

That is a shame. Are his shipping rates reasonable?

Shipping is at cost. So it depends on how heavy the stuff is.

Payment... er sterling cheque, I presume IMO... I did mention overseas orders... and offered to do paypal for him... but phone him up and chat first... see what he has and what your requirments are.

he makes stuff and take it around shows in the UK and Ireland....

I mentined circular pedestals.. for round bases and gave him a couple for size...

Sounds good. It's a good thing I have friends in the UK in case I want to pick up an item or two.

No I don't think he does.

Either way his pieces look great. What do you think would go well with a blue resin miniature on a round 30mm base?

Beech.

Fungal colonised beech to give the dark lines and wavy patterns. Don't worry the fungus is dead.

I have just got 36' of 1 1/2" thick shelves from that that I need to sand and finish.

I'll give him a ring tomorrow. I have given him a "standard round figure base" which looks good set into the hole in the wood, I think a "display figure base" with rounded edges would look better set on top.

I like the Zebrano too

I liked that too.

Beech is cheaper than Zebrano.

PM me with what you would like to spend and I'll see.
