does anybody have any tutorials on how to model explosions?

Are you talking about modelling an explosion mid-explode, or the after effects of an explosion, like a crater and some debris?  I've seen some pretty neat shell incoming about to explode models, too :)

what sort of explosion?

Hollywood fireball?
WW1 earth plume?
exploding vehicle or building?

Nuke?

sorry, should have made that clearer.

it's for my zoanthrope blasting down a dark eldar jetbike conversion, so I'm looking for a suitible holywood vehicle explosion, mostly fire and the very start of some smoke since the model is of a second after the blow has been struck

If it was me, I'd probably try using cotton wool, appropriately coloured and fixed.  Perhaps with something more solid in the middle for the flames, perhaps not.
