Title: Dragon Head WIP - Skull finished (image heavy)
Post by: Caerban on May 05, 2008, 07:30:35 AM
You may remember from a while back my strange wading bird, which I was ridiculously claiming at the time was a WIP for a dragon head:
Well I've finally finished the skull. It's a bit over the top, I could have done it a bit more roughly but as it's a learning process for me, this sculpting lark, I wanted to go the whole hog. Gotta learn the full monty before you can work out where you can make the short cuts, right? I'm not gonna put Kev's or Snuurg's in the shade but I'm quite proud of how it's going so far:
A scale shot next to Reaper's heroic armature (roughly 30mm):

Finally here's a shot with the lower jaw in situ:
There's another shot of this in my Cheddermonger gallery, taken without the flash. In this pic the lower jaw isn't quite finished yet but since it was taken I've added incisors in the tip of the jaw as well as the canines that are just glued on in the pic, carnassials, socketed them properly, added depth to the chin and put a smooth(ish) finish on it.
I've also just made a 2 part mold of the upper section to assuage my paranoia about making a donkey's bum of it at this stage. Hopefully I can get casts (assuming I can find anyone selling a resin or plaster I can use) and use them to add the musculature. It'll also give me a chance to play with lower jaw positioning. So what do people think so far?

Looks good mate  :icon_wink:  It has a slight Tyrannid look to it if you ask me but once painted will be more Dragon-esque methinks

I like it. Are you just doing the skull?

That skull is great. Very reptilian. The detail on that dragon will be quite intensive when its finished...

Please finish it  :Walkdrag:

Nope. I'm going to sculpt the squishy bits onto one of the casts I hope to make. *fingers crossed*

Great news, so then there will be a chance of getting the skull and a full dragon?

Erm... basically the idea was for a dragon head for my girlfriend's birthday. Something she could paint up. Once I've finished hers I suppose I could ask her nicely if I could use some of the spare skulls to create something different (it is her present after all, it would lose a little something if everyone had one), perhaps even a full body. This is (in parallel with George) my first attempt at pushing putty so I wouldn't expect anything too great if she says yes. Again this all assumes I can get some resin and that my mold (which is also my first attempt) actually works.

A quick update of work on the dragon, I'm not reet good at remembering to take photos of what I'm doing so these are mostly me trying to work out where I'm going wrong:
I had to make new teeth I just couldn't get them to cast. Built a bit of spine with some Superfine white Milliput attached it to the cast and then started trying to tack some muscles onto it.

This is where I'm up to as of tonight. And this illustrates exactly the reason for taking the pictures. It doesn't look as lumpy as that to me. And finally a quick close up:

I'm quite proud of the eyelids... but you know... small things...  :D

Hey Caerban.  I don't often comment of sculpt WIP threads, as I have little to contribute - but I had to chime in and say that your work on this one so far is awesome :D

IIRC a bunch of us jumped when we saw the FoD heads-up for Simply Bearings (http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/index.php?osCsid=f6ac1a7cdb26347369eff735c486986d).

Hullo!  Keep it up, Caerban. ;)

What do you do when you start sculpting something for your girlfriend and find yourself suddenly single before you finish it?   :icon_tears:
I'm not sure I have the heart to finish him.   :sad11:

I am sure it is. Either way it is a great piece so far Caerban and I hope you see it through to the end.

I know what you're all thinking, "How can Caerban have the nerve to post threads on favourite dragons and constantly badger Snuurg, Andy and Kev about their dragons when he hasn't updated his own?"
Actually what you're probably thinking is more along the lines of, "Why does he always fill out the start of his posts with ridiculous passages of wordy exposition?" But that's not the point. The point is here's a dragon update:

(http://www.cheddarmongers.org/prod/gallery2/d/21011-2/blue+dragonling.jpg) (http://www.cheddarmongers.org/prod/pic/Caerban/blue+dragonling.jpg.html)

Not the one you were after? Oh well then:
(http://www.cheddarmongers.org/prod/gallery2/d/21005-2/Dragon+side.jpg) (http://www.cheddarmongers.org/prod/pic/Caerban/Dragon+side.jpg.html)

Another angle:
(http://www.cheddarmongers.org/prod/gallery2/d/21008-2/Dragon+angle+shot.jpg) (http://www.cheddarmongers.org/prod/pic/Caerban/Dragon+angle+shot.jpg.html)

The bulk of him is mostly skinned up now. A little bit of story-telling has crept in so I've added armature for claws and tried to make it look like he's muscling his way in through a window/portal/magic mirror or whatever. Comments?

I Like it a lot!  If it was ever cast I'd cut it closer to the head and use it as a hunting trophy for a dwarf tavern.

Gotta have a lip-snarl!
Seriously, thanks. I was trying to inject a bit of sentience and character into the face. It's not just a flipping great lizard of death, it's a smart flipping great lizard of death and it has the Elvis sneer to prove it  :icon_biggrin2:

Way back at the start of this rambling sculpt WIP I did a dragon skull as a base. It was generally well received. And when I decided to cast it up in resin in case I made a boo-boo people said things such as:

Quote from: Custom_Hobby on May 05, 2008, 09:32:14 AM
:metoo: Get it cast. I know I would buy a few.

My initial casts did not go well however, the teeth in particular were too fine to cast. The casts were good enough for me to use as a base but not good enough to be a "product" for discerning consumers like you FODders out there. I did promise to come back to the skull at some point and make it more castable, so this long weekend having reached an annoying impasse with the bust's talons (back to the drawing board on them) I took up the skull again and using a mix of 50% white heavy ProCreate and 50% Magic Sculp began work bulking the teeth up. I started with a roughly shaped blob, then gently filed and scrud*ed away until chunky toothiness ensued. It took a mighty long time. A bit more of my mix and I beefed up the tooth sockets and the whole thing looked swell, both skull and mandible. I left them to dry last night and this morning checked them out under natural light. The mandible is great ready for me to make another stab at molding it. The skull? Also perfect... until I fumble fingered it and it fell onto the floor and knocked all it's front teeth out.  :swear: :swear: I'll get back on it when my heart's in it again but there might actually be a purchasable skull out there soon.
