As requested by Mike, here's my WIP of my first unit of what I hope will be many of the pointy-eared ones. I got a unit of 15 of the now 20 year old Skarloc's Wood Elf Archers very cheaply on Ebay and have started prepping and undercoating them. I have more coming in the post so I should have about 40 (!) :icon_w00t: to do.... Here are some to begin with:

The old lead is much easier and faster to work with than the white metal GW uses nowadays; in my experience at least... :icon_thumleft: It does mean that over-zealous filing and scrud*ing can lead to detail loss, so I still take care. Here are the first four undercoated (Halford's matt grey spray - I recommend):

I'm going to be doing them in a traditional green/brown colour scheme with red detailing - I wanted old school colours to go with old school models. You gotta problem with that, punk? :icon_silly:

looking good mate, I agree with the colour scheme. Thats what I would do wth mine if I allowed them out the box.
I use Simoniz grey primer. 12 cans for less than £30 inc delivery off ebay, seller is Motoraids. 500 ml cans too. Not sure of price in Halfords.

watch them kittens.....my two new bundles of fluff have taken to chewing the standard bearers of my figs!!!!
I can't remember how much it was... relatively pricy I seem to remember - thanks for the tip about Simoniz - will have to look into that. How do you rate it in terms of cover and graininess (granularity?)
Re: furry mini - she is very small at the moment (my adult cat is about 5 times her size)

I like the simoniz, it gives good coverage but it looks like you've drenched the fig at first. Once its dry the detail is all there and you heave a sigh of relief. Its a very smooth finish and I rate it as good as GW's. Theres various colours too so depending on the finished artice you can primer accordingly. I like grey though as I find the detail easy to see.
My two are 6 months old now and getting attitude, will have their balls chopped soon.....Rocky and Gismo I named them.

Anyway! Back to the blog - the idea is to try to put together my first army, I've always loved the wood elves and especially Jes Goodwin's sculpts for GW and Marc Copplestone's for Grenadier. The idea is to try to put together an army using Jes Goodwin '80s sculpts, some Gary Morley '90s sculpts, and whichever ones I like from the new range (not sure off-hand who sculpted what). Monsters will hopefully include the huge Trish Morrison Eagle from the old Marauder range, as well as the new dryads and older Treemen.
As I said before the colour scheme is going to be pretty traditional, but I'm aiming to use a variety of browns and greens mixing the colour scheme within units to convey the image of a group of individual elves brought together in defence of their home.
My inspiration - if this means anything to anyone - White Dwarf 141 with Mike Mcvey's Wood Elf army.
Fabian if you know all of the items you want post the list over in the wish list section and maybe some of the members can help you find your elves.
Already done in regards to spearmen, and leader figures from 80s range but I'll try to get up the other ones I'd like as well.
I have treemen and such (wood elves etc) from about 10-15 years ago that i will never get to paint and am willing to sell.
Post what all your after and i will get some pictures done on saturday and you get first dibs on them.
Blocked in black (VGC black with GW black ink and tiny amount of water) for areas that will end up black (scabbard), metallics, and eyes. Bit scrud*py in places since I had the shakes for some reason :icon_scratch: :swear:

I lost the shakes and this stage was thus neater (looks better in rl). Chainmail is all GW drybrushed (Boltgun Metal, Chainmail, Mithril Silver). The Gold is VMC Old Gold (horrible tendency to clump on the brush) with an extreme highlight of GW MIthril Silver. The silvery metals will get a Brown/Blue mix ink wash, and the gold a yellow/brown mix ink wash. And that should be the metal done..... :icon_rolleyes:

Well, this is after applying the ink wash for the metals, base-coating the leather in GW Scorced Brown and getting annoyed with the flesh (GW Dark Flesh with increasing amounts of Elf Flesh) - it's very scrud*py out when put together as a group and viewed from 1ft away they look okay. Ignore the messed up face of the one on the far right.. (I wish I could) but I need to fix it.... :violent1:
Thoughts so far.... it's tricky to get used to the very angular faces after painting lots of Kev's Hasslefree faces which are more rounded; trying to strike a balance between speed and what satisfies me personally is quite hard, I might try a black basecoat next time or a grey basecoat with a black/brown ink wash (which worked well for my HF Kindred); oh and Scorched Brown is a very cool colour. :thumbsup:
UPDATE: base colours of clothing done, in VMC English Uniform (me likey), and an old GW green which I think might be Ork Flesh or somethinglike that (me no likey).
UPDATE 2: after nearly finishing them I realised I hated the colour scheme and my approach to painting them. In a jar of Dettol they go! Quite therapuetic... now prepping some others as well.
Well that was fun! Now when it stops raining I can undercoat them (again!) :icon_rolleyes:

Undercoated now, along with a sabretooth tiger who is nothing to do with this blog at all, but is to do with the RLS WIP thread on FOD. TLAs rock. :icon_whistling:

So... i set them aside in a fit of pique a while ago but have been galvanised into getting on with a small unit by The Frothers Fantasy Warriors Display/Participation game at Salute.
I'm not particularly chuffed with my painting on them but they'll do for the tabletop.

here's where I'm up to; the Champion was painted two years ago (first mini I'd painted for over a year!) and the other two were done in the last few days to a wargames standard (ok, I am painting the gems on all of them, daft I know but it does mean I can do gems faster now, esp with a coat of gloss on 'em)

Latest from the troops at the front line. Haven't done much today due to waking up with an extremely sore neck (I wonder why?! :homework: ) ;few gloves, boots, pouches painting wise and prepped a warchief (general in Fantasy Warriors parlance) and a herald (an army musician).
