After 12 months of constant doctors and testing, they have finally decided to give my two-year-old son hearing aids. With a consistent vocabulary of only three words, hearings aids are essential so that he can finally acquire language. The downside is that after a year of expensive tests and doctors, he'll need one in each ear and his insurance will not cover a cent.
To help defray the *massive* expense of the hearing aids, both Ann and I will be clearing out the majority of our miniature collections. We are starting with the painted miniatures and the still-sealed miniatures. Over the next few weeks, we'll be adding lots of loose, packaged, unidentified, old and in general, lots of miniatures. The one item I am always looking for is the old Ral Partha Bronze Dragon of Pern but that is not something that most people would have stashed away I have learned. Other than that I just look for items that were OOP when I really started collecting.
Neither of us have any copies of the McCaffery dragon. Those things seem to be uber rare. :( I'll post when more LTds go up.

Nope, Darksword does do Parkinson stuff now but has never produced this set or minis off this artwork. This mini is a very old Reaper Miniatures limited edition set.

Ah, now you see I was thinking of the Anne Foerster diorama base fromthis page (http://www.darkswordminiatures.com/gallery/set2ravenstone.htm) which was probably a one off custom job since it was a competition piece. They did discuss doing a few similar large bases for specific models and may have even released one for one of the other models which is what got me confused.
<G> Yeah those bases are custom. Darksword never released the large bases, not enough interest I guess in doing them. Pity, they were nice.

Sally & Kev White of Hasslefree Miniatures have VERY graciously donated the miniature, 'Victoria & David' to help defray the just under 5,000 USD that must be paid up front for Alexander's hearing aids. This is a very collectible miniature, that was released in very limited amounts in 2004 by Hasslefree miniatures. There are only 200 production castings and 12 master castings in existence and as the mold no longer exists, more will never be produced.
Our family is very appreciative of Hasslefree's family for their unselfish gift for our cause.
Sally has also provided a photograph as well as a few words of her own about this wonderful Hasslefree collectors piece.

After a year of testing and multiple doctors my son, Alexander, was finally diagnosed with hearing loss and the amount of his hearing loss was pinned down. We were relieved to finally know the amount of hearing loss and that it would be fully correctable with hearing aids in both ears. I won two items (I think) and am watching a few more.
As of today, we are halfway to our goal of 5,000 USD for Alexander's hearing aids. I wish to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has helped us get to this point. Raising 5,000.00 USD on 2-3 dollar average miniatures is a mammoth undertaking with ebay and paypal fees. We have received six cash donations and seven donations from companies and individuals. Both of us are very grateful for these donations and the rest of these will be auctioned off as soon as the auctions are ready.
As of today, Ann and I have decided that we will not be accepting any more donations, either in cash or of miniatures from individuals or manufacturers. The remainder of the amount Alex needs will come from the sales of our items off of ebay only. For those who have donated cash or miniatures, feel free to pm either of us privately if you wish your donation returned. We will be glad to comply. This applies as well to those in progress.
The reason for our doing this is simple. Apparently we've upset several people greatly because we have not managed to raise 5,000.00 USD in the month we have been auctioning items and questioning our motives for auctioning items. I'm not referring to folks asking in kindness how close we are, if we are there yet or for a general update. Friendly inquiries are always welcome!! It's the nasty, spiteful jabs that are not welcome. While I understand and lament the fact that such people exist everywhere, even in such an extremely nice community as gamers and miniatures lovers, between Alexander's need to hear, my fathers second heart surgery yesterday and my own health, spiteful, nasty people are something I do not need to deal with. The toll emotionally is not needed or appreciated. And no, I'm not going to name and shame because I won't dignify these people's actions with the attention that they are obviously so desperately craving and unable to get in their lives otherwise. Our own auctions will continue because Alex needs his hearing aids. Feel free to bid if there is something you like.

@Agentmolar Probably not as pissed as I got having to wade through it and not being able to tell it from the rest of my email until I opened it. :tantrum: It pretty much stopped after I posted about it, thankfully! I have been accepting private donations and due to an incredibility flooring action from one gentleman we cut the amount left to raise by half in a day! If you were thinking of a miniature donation, though, I would still have to decline at this point because...
We only have 1,000 USD left to raise!!!! That's an amazing feat considering the overall cost of the aids and the relatively small price of miniatures compared to that. Taking into account what is up for auction, whats going up tonight and tomorrow and store traffic, I think we will have the 1k before any additional items could be shipped to us or run through the length of an auction so it would be unfair to do so. That would be one of my two business partners at Impact! Miniatures who is an award winning painter. He offered to paint a 13 figure team for one guy for $450 and sold one of his 5 already painted teams for $500 and donated the entire $950 to the effort.
Add this in with the Chaos All-Stars auction which I hope to go around $250 when done and we've been really glad that the Impact! partners and our loyal customers willing to pay for our stuff have helped get Alex that much closer to hearing.

Congrats on the home stretch! Very pleasing news...Ive purchased some mordheim goodies from you and awaiting the package at the moment.. however im tempted buy some more of your auctions. I still think naming and shaming the bloke who had a go at you would be a good move. Even if its here, this community is small and we need to out buzzard*s like that.

As for the naysayers there are those out there who have already pegged these people but I will not confirm or deny it as these would get off on the attention. Since I posted on the matter they have decided to leave me alone, which is all I want at this point so I can concentrate on Alex.

Greetings to all,
Last night was a milestone in our quest to pay for Alex's hearing aids. When all the auctions currently up have been paid for, we will have reached beyond the goal of $5000 we needed. Next week, after all the auctions are ended, we intend to do a final accounting and post on all boards.We know everyone is anxious to see what your efforts have achieved in the past few weeks.
While we have probably passed the final goal when all the people have paid for tonight's auctions, we have put up a last batch of auctions of donated items which arrived in the mail today, and those last auctions will end on the day after Christmas. We were told by the people who donated the items to auction that if we reached our goal before their items arrived in the mail, we could just keep them or auction them and keep the money rather than return them. We have no intention of keeping them or the money from the auctions. There are two reasons we are putting them up as a final auction: one, they were donations intended to help Alex; two, although we will have reached our goal, we think the donors would like to see their donations go to good use. After subtracting the cost of Alex's hearing aids from the total raised, we intend to "pay it forward." Any money left over after paying for the hearing aids will be donated, in honor of everyone on the boards, to another child in the miniature community whose illness has caused financial hardship on the parents. We estimate that sum should be considerable. It is only fair that we take the money we do not need beyond our original goal and help another child. Also, as soon as the last auction has ended, we will be closing the eBay store and removing all items. They will not be needed again until Alex is ready for his first upgrade in 6 months and that sum is one we can manage by ourselves.
Monday, we will be setting up an appointment for Alex to have impressions made and hopefully he will have hearing aids within the next two weeks. You will never know how grateful we are to the many people on the boards who stepped forward to help, by sending good wishes, donating items for auction, selling their painting services, buying from the eBay store, bidding on the auctions, donating money raised from their own auctions, paying extra for their purchases to donate to Alex, and to those who gave cash donations. We had no idea that it was possible to get this far in a few short weeks. Miracles do happen and Alex will be hearing soon. We will keep everyone informed of Alex's progress and also post when everyone has paid and we have reached a final amount. Have a wonderful holiday from our family to yours.

For all of you who helped Alex get his hearing aids, we gratefully send our thanks. We got his set of temperary aids this morning. It took a week for the permanent behind-the-ears part to be made and these temps will help him hear at a low level until his permanent in-the-ear section come in next week. By that time, we hope he has gotten used to wearing them. Already we notice a great difference in his demenor. With them on, he tries out different sound ranges, volume and he said "Bye-Bye" clear as a bell today. We were afraid he would freak out at hearing a stranger's voice for the first time, but he was fearless. He wants to hear.
For those interested in the accounting for this project, here is the breakdown.

We had hoped to have money left over to send on to another child, but the eBay and Paypal fees were taken out over the course of the project. At the end, when all auctions were done and the store items removed, all the money had been accounted for.

Thanks guys. Alex is doing wonderfully and has already give us a few crystal clear words such as "bye-bye" and the heart melter "mama". We will have a lot of work ahead of us as he is attached to some words (out of his itty bitty vocublary) and applied them across the board to everything. He threw a fit today because he was corrected when calling a pumpkin picture in his favorite book a "cookie". We couldn't tell if he thought the pumpkin was a cookie, wanted a cookie shaped like a pumpkin (like he had at halloween) or was trying to get across some other concept. On the other hand he's adoring reading time which makes me soo happy.

Loading the site seems to be hit and miss for me lately. But since today I can see it here is an update on Alex for those that don't read the Forum of Doom.
Alex has had his permanent hearing aids for almost a month now (barring several problems such as one of them not working and needing to be remade). As you can see from the photograph, they are quite inconspicuous which will help him later when he interacts with a group of other children and has helped him to avoid stares from adults now. Being a friendly child, he cannot quite understand why they look at him so intently when he tries to be friendly. We couldn't care if they looked like those massive headphones from the 1980s; we just are beyond belief in the difference they make in his ability to hear. His vocabulary increases each day by leaps and bounds and, for the first time, he can interact with us using words. He's gone through the babbling stage and is back to simple sentences and the occasional full sentence. A massive improvement from silence! For some unknown reason, his hearing, when the aids are not in, has increased since he had tubes put in his eardrums and he has been wearing his aids. During his final hearing test he was tested both with and without his hearing aids. His hearing loss, without aids, has decreased from 50 dbLs to 30 dbLs since he got tubes and received his hearing aids. Why no one can say. With his hearing aids, his range is 15 dbls (average is up to 20 dbls) which means he in functioning within the normal range. He's got a lot of catching up to do, but is learning quickly. He's already learning to re-label things that were set in his head, such as all children were "babies" but now they are "girls" and "boys", even if it took a little girl his age being offended at being called a "baby" for him to want to make the distinction.
We cannot thank all of you enough for helping us give Alex this chance to hear so much sooner than we could have done on our own. The past few months have been a whirlwind of tests, adjustments, language lessons and watching Alex experience a hearing world without being scared by it. We are deeply touched by your generosity. Thank you very much!
