Title: Reaper Fire Giant - Opinions Pls
Post by: gi6ers on October 03, 2007, 04:21:06 AM
So I've got one of these on the way:

Do I paint her as a larger scale dwarf or go with the dark skinned fire giant? (She's 60-70mm i think)

Giant Dwarf, would be the way I'd go.  But I can see the appeal of painting her as a Fire Giant.  That doesn't really help does it?  Sorry about that.

OK - I've had a coffee now, so I can be more useful.  Fire Giant is what I think.

Is that better? :D

ok, so what does a fire giant look like? Any pics folks? Is that a stone weapon? Bronze/Steel armour? Hair and skin colour?

Dark skin and yellow, orange or red hair, is what I normally think.  I think I prefer steel armour, but bronze or brass or gold elements would seem to work.

Google Image Search for "Fire Giant":

Not an expert but am sure its steel weapons and armour and plenty of yellows reds and oranges.  Red\Orage hair is a definate for that figure IMHO.  Normal skintones but could be wrong.....

Red hair sounds like a good shout, anyone got a decent recipe that won't end up like a GW mohican dwarf..?

how about going from scab red to blood red on the hair, no orange highlight.  On the metals though use an orange ink after to give them a hot magical look?

I was going to suggest starting at a 50:50 Scab Red Black mix to start, then working up from there.  Even with a (little) dark orange highlight, it shouldn't look slayerish.  You could always use some TCR, or a red wash to tame it if it goes a bit Gotrek.

"I was going to suggest starting at a 50:50 Scab Red Black mix to start, then working up from there."

That would probably be more ideal for Gi6ers and his techniques.  I'd basecoat scab red, highlight blood red, thin black ink wash, highlight blood red again.  There wouldnt be enough depth though for Gi6ers I dont think.

Look, this might come as a surprise but... There ARE no fire giants for real... I think...?  :icon_wink:
So anything should be right shouldn't it?

How about going for an obsidian weapon? (greenish black I think...) the ornamentation of it looks like it could be one (or rather jade but jade would be useless in a weapon) and obsidian is a lava biproduct isn't it? So it would be most right for a firegiant.
I'd go for black red and orange for a fiery look. Armor a reddish gold/copper.

I love this sculpt... now. When I first saw it I thought "What was mr. Klocke thinking?" Then I saw a wonderful painted version and the heavyset legs and all just looked so right. So I'll really be looking forward to seeing your version of it.

Good call.  An obsidan spear would look great :D

she turned up today, really well done in multi-part. the head and cloak are one part, then it's the body and hands/weapon.

Will post a WIP soon, probably the weekend as I'm on company drinking duty for the next day or so  :icon_beer:

@Bodhi - I agree, this has been on my buying list for a while. Hopefully I'll do it justice but there is always the stripping pot  :icon_cool:

I was going to say a giant dwarf to go with all the dwarves you have but she is intended to be a fire giant. A good pic would be this one:

or

Mr Muller made a good male one sold by Otherworld if she needs a partner

The obsidian spear sounds great.

The way I've been doing it recently is deceptively simple.

Base coat: Scab red.
Next coat: Red Gore
Next coat: Blood Red (maybe I got this one confused with the last one)
Next coat: a dark orange.

Basicaly going along the top row of the mega paintset qwerty style. Sometimes a red & brown in mix can be used to add a little shading. I haven't worked out another way of doing ginger folk yet.

I could also see her working in a very different colour scheme (fair skin, fair hair, blues & silver scheme). Sort of a giant dwarven valkyrie.

Mmmmm .... Giant Dwarf Valkyrie ....

Now, you're just trying to distract me from something, aren't you Balgin?  What could it be? ... mmmm ... Giant Dwarf Valkyrie ...  :icon_eek: Nevermind :D

Ok, I'll go with human skin, mixed metal armour and red hair. That way she's a giant dwarf fire giant valkyrie...or something - as long as it looks ok I'll be happy.

Ta!

Nice choice gi6ers. I picked this mini up when I was showing Agentmolar around NYC. I was suprised at how good it is.

Reaper are a funny company, I don't buy much of their normal stuff but occasionally they come out with real gems - This one, the wereshark, cthulhu amongst others, I'd like the Dwarf paladin that Dagrin posted a little while ago too, it'll pop up on ebay eventually..

We all know I like their large dragons, and most of their demons. I really feel they missed the boat with that new large demon they made (the one with four arms and the tattered wings).

Anyway I dont want to take this off topic, I look forward to seeing this one painted. It might give me some ideas. I ordered the fire giant from otherworld to go with mine.

I got to look at this one close up.   If you are looking for a vote I would go with Fire Giant.  This another one that I need to pic up.  I know that there is a WIP on this one (http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=28475&st=0&gopid=430561&#entry430561 (http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=28475&st=0&gopid=430561&#entry430561)) but I never saw a finished model.

Reaper has allot of great stuff like this.  I am very much turned off by cartoony figs.

Ske looks like a giant Drow right now (I might paint one with skin close to this but as fire giant)

She looks very 'Wayne Reynolds' inpired - which is a good thing in my book.

To me the first one looks more like a frost giant. It is too blue. Fire giants (in artwork :icon_wink: ) are darker. I guess I am being picky but I am not crazy about either of them.

The guy does say in his post that he'd painting it as a frost giant - but yes, I agree it is far too blue.

Yeah, that's royal navy, not frost.

On the other hand I like the second one a lot - really nice colour choices.

I guess it is the pink thats throws me off but not as a color choice (I just hate that it always automatically gets associated with female miniatures). The colors do all work well together on the second one.

Size please, how big is it? You know why :) (any more of these and I could start an army of dwarven giants by including maybe Reaper's 02599 : Frorigh, Frost Giant (http://www.reapermini.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=613&quantity=1) & 02622 : Frulla, Female Giant

(http://www.reapermini.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=636&quantity=1) could be servants/assistants).

I saw the pink as a dusky rose-brown.

Hmm.. that does sound kind of pink...  :D

I'm not seeing pink so much as I'm seeing a really pale pastely washed out faded looking colour scheme that really turns me off. Now most of the other versions I've seen look good to me (like the uncast green did) but that one just makes me feel apathetic towards it.
