Anyone want to start a PvP campaign withyour truely as the dm?
DnD 3.5 this time (I've tweeked the story to this system). The story is similar to my previouse one, but with the wrincles securely flattened and alot more thought drailed into the pool we call GMing.
Overview (much bigger than last time)
Having grown up as an outcast in Ralgron City, you have never been able to fit into normal society.
During your turn to adulthood there was a massive outbreak as a new ruler came to the thrown, the controversial and already powerful son of the previous ruler came to power, by the name and title of the Baron Praxis, who felt it necessary upon reaching the thrown to enforce the laws of Ralgron City even tighter, and more importantly make some new ones, of which one was to capture and imprison any creatures in his 'Haven' city, and to do this he got citizens to enrolee in the new city guard, known as the crimson guard.
When news of a new ruler reached outside the city walls, the dragons to the east, which had made a truce with the Baron's father, became more 'hostile' to the new ruler, who was much less happy to avoid war, and to accept the dragon's simple requests to have a peaceful relationship with the newly renamed Haven City.
After a few warning attacks on the city from the dragons, the Baron started to realise who he was messing with, and soon happily came to a deal with the elder dragon to keep peace.
During the next year you three, along with several others, were all tracked down and thrown into imprisonment.
Throughout your long and painful stay you were all tested with new potions, and concoctions, which were unsafe to try on 'pure' people, which had ill effects on your health and have managed to eventually kill all of the dozen prisoners, except three.
Slowly, news of corruption and desperate deals has reached you in prison, and you have heard of a secret group known as the underground who have just as much hatred for the new baron as you, and plans of escape have managed to synchronise between you three, and one on the outside, whom has contacted each of you individually through different means.
Today is the day you would make or break it, today, you would get your lives back, and today you would start your war with the baron. Today you escape.
Anybody interested?
EDIT: Any better. :icon_wink:
Did anyone used to watch Armstrong and Miller? They had a 'character' called The Baron. It just made me think of that.
Ahem. Carry on.
yes, yes I will :)
How many characrters are you looking for?
What level do we start at?
What is out?
What is in?
Woah ... big block of text ..... needs ... breaking ... down ... into ... paragraphs ......
or easily digestable chunks.
Sorry but at the moment I'm finding it hard to concentrate on so many ideas crammed into one paragraph in brief form. Aren't you supposed to begin a new paragraph with every new major concept or event?
LOL, it took me a second to get through it too. I want to see where this goes.
Would you accept a dwarven gunner of Bor? It's nowhere near as overpowered as it sounds (for instance, he starts with 30 bullets and enough powder for 12 shots, more powder has a craft dc of very bloody high and he'd generaly have to be 5th or 6th level to have a 50% chance of making some replacement powder). And making twelve shots last over five or six levels, without letting the gun get stolen or vandalised, now that's real resource management :).
can I play an Imp?
If there is a place, I'm in!
You'll start as 6th level (so you aren't weedly little people taking out goblins for 3 levels), and will have no equiptment (which will be shortly rectified)
I'm looking for 4 players, 5 if nead be, but 3-4 is the best
Your not allowed to be lawful, you are in jail after all swearing revenge on the Baron who threw you in there.
Also, no elves. The city guard are all elves, and they are seen as the best race, so wouldn't be thrown in jail
Imps are fine, so long as they aren't LA 6 (I doubt)
Dwarven gunners are fine
Each character has to have some reason to be thrown in jail. It could be anything, so Balgin, your guy could be seen as a heratic for making gunpowder, a very rarely used weapon in those times.
Chrysalis, welkom aboard!
How do we do the stats? 4d6 drop the lowest? Also do we do our possesions and get them later?
Do you have the 'Savage Species' book? He could be a multiclass ('x' levels of imp & 'y' levels of whatever class). He could be in jail simply for being an imp. Do you have a problem with an evil character?
Chrysalis what type of character do you want to play?
Quote from: eyeolas on September 29, 2007, 07:19:04 AM
Your not allowed to be lawful, you are in jail after all
It's a set up I tell you! Chaotic people fit lawful people all the time.
You wouldn't want to see a dwarven gunner at 6th level, he'd effectively have 120' ranged "sneak attack damage" added onto his regular shots so long as he was using his gun (and the rest, probably take rapid reload at least once so loading his musket isn't two full round actions, yeah, guns are slow but really dangerous :p).
My character would need to be lawful (all imps are), but being evil would be enough (aside from being a devil) to have him tossed in the jail.
Lawful people can be banged up by an evil or chaotic regime. Take Burma as a real life example. A Lawful person could unknowingly break a law; their alignment doesn't make them incapable of error. They do their best to follow rules, and in the case of a lawful evil character twist them to their own advantage or outright lie.
A paladin thrown in jail in a Lawful Evil police state wouldn't sit there and think "Ah well, guess I better follow the law, no matter that the government is corrupt or a bunch of devil worshippers." Nah! He'd do his damnest to break outta there, kick some Evil tail and restore the goodly king to the throne!
(If you can't tell, I like heroic characters...) :icon_redface:
To be helpful for a second as I saw in the other d20 modern topic that you are looking for other fora in which to play, I can recommend the following PbP fora: www.enworld.org ; www.paizo.com ; http://brennor.dyndns.org/rpg/Forums.html
I'm playing in a game on the last two and trying to get in one on the first. They are also just damn good as references and news sites.

Oh! I'm aboard! Great!!! :icon_w00t:
I haven't been creating a character for so long that I don't know what to do.
May I play a Gnoll?
Ok, lauful is fine, but preferably not LG if it can be helped (I'm not restricting no paladins, they can't help it)
4d6 drop the lowest is fine
don't write anything in the possessions bit of your sheet, you will be equipt with weapons, armour, items etc as the games goes on, and as I see fit.
Gnolls are fine
Balgin, so there not overpowered as they sound aye? I am getting a sence of a strong connction between you and dwarves
Oh, and I forgot, no dragons or half dragons, or dragon shamans or diciples etc. Nothing tat makes you dragon like.

Great! I know there is a booklet about the Gnolls, but I don't have it. I can scratch a character from the monster manual (with a +1 LA), unless somebody knows the gnolls racial features...
Ok I will roll mine up and send you the sheet.

How many fighter classes do you know with medium (cleric) attack bonus and a serious lack of feats? :p
Mike, do you have this book (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product_info.php?products_id=1910&it=1) in pdf form? If not then I'd have to write a lot of stuff out by hand (and I don't mind doing that but it'll take a lot longer). I'll see what his chances of making a new gun would be ('cause if it's missing then recovering it would probably be very difficult indeed).
I just wanna use the "incoming fire" class feature where he gets to treat incoming ranged weapons as clay pidgeon shooting practice :). He might even shout "pull" as well just before he shoots them down. Almost all the class features use hp to activate. So, if I took the Sharpshooting class feature (+1 to hit), he'd need to pay 1hp for every shot he used it on. So stuff burns down slowly (and having a hp cost to use feats makes them considerably less powerful). I like the Lone Wolf spellcasting system (it's hp/power points based instead of the Vancian spell slot system of much crud*ness).
quite a few...
See the rest of my post. The hp costs really offset the class abilities in the long run. I think even the rapid reload ones (tiers 1, 2 and 3) have hp costs (per shot!!!!).
Plus Lone Wolf characters don't get feats (but they get more class features). Many people say the dwarven gunner is slightly underpowered if anything (especialy with no feats 'till 2nd level).
You just said a bunch of things I don't know. I have never heard of lone wolf, or of this class so yes, it would take some typing on your part to even let me consider it, and at the moment it is sounding like it has seriouse ups and seriouse downs.
Don't worry, I haven't committed to playing yet but I'll jot down a summary of what you could expect to see by 6th level anyway.
Sorry Balgin I don't have that one.
Eyeolas I think I am going to make the Imp a Rogue

Oh I've got the book, just no pdf version of it :p.
Okay, so what would a gunner have at 6th level then......
No racial abilities (exept for the "no speed penalties for encmubrance and armour" one, Borese dwarfs don't get con bonuses, darkvision or combat bonuses against things, worst luck (although the +4 dodge bonus against giants might make sense to put back in)). Craft skills (armourer, blacksmith, weaponsmith) are treated as class skills whatever class he takes levels in if multiclassing.
No Feats
HD d10
BAB: +4
Fort +5
Ref +2
Will +3
Skill Points : 2 per level (quadruppled at 1st, + int mod obviously)
Class Skills: appraise, concentration, craft, disable device, intimidate, jump, knowledge (architecture and engineering, history, religion & warfare), speak language and swim.
All simple & martial weapon proficiencies + dwarven waraxe, dwarven rifle & dwarven pistol. All armour profs, shield prof (but not tower shield).
Forge Lore: Can always take 10 on any craft (blacksmith, armoursmith or weaponsmith) check in any conditions (including stuff like ignoring combat happening all around him as he straps a bomb together or something like that)
Smoke Shot: Uses 2 powder charges (instead of 1) and creates a cloud of thick smoke around the gun barrel that glasts for 1d4 rounds. It grants the gunner 50% concealment but due to being used to it, his foes only get 25% concealment against him (they'd get 50% concealment against anyone else 'though).
Advanced Smithing: No -2 penalty for not having the right tools for the job (in LWd20 doing things like eprforming first aid without a healing kit actualy incurr a -2 penalty so there's no real bonus there exept for the ability to work with shoddy or improvised tools out in the field).
Marksmanship +1d6 : basicaly adds d6 damage to all ranged attacks with his gun (30' pistols, 120' rifle)
2 Secrets of the Gun (from this list):
Uncanny Accuracy (1hp/shot): +1 damage (if taken multiple times the damage bonus increases but the hp cost remains the same)
Incoming Fire (2hp): May shoot down incoming non firearm shots (opposed attack roll & must have a loaded gun at the time or pay the hp costs to rapidly reload too)
Sharpshooting (1hp/shot): +1 to hit (if taken multiple times the attack bonus increases but the hp cost remains the same)
Rapid Load (cost varies):
If taken once, (1hp) reloading is a full round action, not two full round actions
If taken twice (2hp) relaoding is a move action (so he can shoot in the same round)
If taken 3 times (1hp/shot) then reloading is a free action so he can take as many shots as his BAB allows (if he's willing to pay the price)
Two Gun Mastery (may be taken 3 times): It's a complicated one that basicaly involves firing two pistols in the same round, the level 3 version costs 3hp.
Gunbutting (no cost): Can use the rifle as a greatclub without the risk of breaking it.
Sniper's Eye (4hp): If he spends a full round action aiming then, when he shoots next round, he gets to add in an extra +1d6 marksmanship die. it can be taken additional times for no extra cost, it doesn't add more marksmanship dice but instead reduces range penalties for that shot.
A free rifle (2d8 damage, (18)x2, 120' range increments), 26 bullets, powder for 12 shots.
I used that link Fabian gave for rolling the stats and you can see them here http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?a=show&id=1291718
These are before racial adjustments and the extra point at 4th level.
I've been searching on the net for the racial features when creating a gnoll character, and here is how it comes:
Darkvision 60 ft
Strength +4
Constitution +2
Intelligence -2
Charisma -2
+1 natural armor
Automatic language gnoll, bonus language common, draconic, goblin, elven and orc.
Gnolls have a level adjustment of +1 and have D8 hit dices.
If it's ok, I'll roll my character with those...
This is everything you should need to make the character (I wasn't sure if you saw this or not) http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/gnoll.htm
Thanks CH!
I think my gnoll will be a ranger...A nasty ranger :icon_twisted:
Gnolls are fine, just remember it uses 2 levels, one of which is a monster class (2+int for skils, nothing else prety much 'sept HD)
Balgin, WTF! 2d8 18-20/x2. What's there HD, because paying 3 life per shot is not a great loss
I did my rolls for N'nyarok, gnoll ranger:
Rolls for my abilities:

Ten siders (with no racial con bonus). Paying is optional. I'm quite happy to spend two full rounds reloading :).
Ok I went and rolled up my hp. I assumed max hp for the first die (I figured that was standard). An imp has 3d8 so he started with 8 and these are the other two d8's

Two round to reload would really lower the number of shots plus I doubt he would be able to use it much (or reload at all) during close combat.

Chrysalis I use this character sheet (it helps fill in a bunch of things when you put in the stats)
Chrysalis: 2 things: 1, you can re roll your stat line, it is below 13 average.
2, you only get 1 HD roll for being a gnoll, not two. One level is used with LA, the other is a huminoid level, which grants HD and skills, so for your first two levels, you will only get 1d8 and 2+int x4 skill ranks
Ok guys I moved this into the section for the game. Eyeolas is the mod/dm and we are getting this one together.
Right, I need names (screen names at leats) of players:
person, playing, character, sheet
Custom H yes Imp/rogue finished
Chrysalis yes gnoll/ranger TBS
Balgin S maybe dwarf sniper TBS
anyone else?
How many more do you want? 1 or 2?
just one, but if a fifth comes soon after the fourth then they are welkome to play aswell, but no more than 5
Sounds good. I hope Balgin gets in on this. It looks like an interesting group already. We need a mage, cleric, also maybe a front line fighter of some sort.
Balgin is the sniper also good for close quarters fighting?

Ok boss!
If you don't mind, I'll reroll my gnoll HD too (but keeping the ranger rolls).
CH, I've been trying the PDF file, but it says that I have only adobe reader and thus it doesn't save the changes when I modify the sheet (I did the whole sheet and was quite disappointed... :icon_tears:).
I only have adobe reader and I can save changes to it; are you saving it to your temp folder? If so, save it somewhere else on your hard drive.
And... rangers get 1d8 for HD in 3.5E... :icon_ermm:
Do you have the latest version of reader? It should let you save it if you have the newest version of it.
ya, save it into your files, then change from there. Editing CH's file won't save anything, as it is effectively view only, even though you can change the fields, nothing will happen
Ok, I'll reroll all my dices and try the PDF again. Thanks for your help you all! :dragon:

About as good as an extremely heavily armoured cleric with no close combat feats and no healing ability :p. So better than wizards and some thief types and tough enough to make a really good support fighter but not really very good at dishing it out.
The group sounds really interesting :occasion14:
I just sent my new rolls and my CS to you Eyeolas. I hope it will be ok this time.
I'm actualy tempted to go for one of those "sorceror clerics" from the Complete Divine instead, but I'm not sure I can commit to another game at the moment.
The favoured soul? They do sound fun.

Well I worked out a sort of nasty favoured soul/divine champion concept that seriously abused the hell out of the vigour spells bigtime :). But to my mind having no turning is too large a price to pay for sponting anything. It actualy looks more like a warlock than a sorceror (but with something closer to the sorceror's versatility).
My character is done and I will post it in the rr character thread section. Feel free to start threads for your characters guys.

SOO where are we guys?
I have a minor problem with the ECL/Next Level Goal on my CS, otherwise it's ok.
Don't worry about that too much. Eyeolas can sort that for you. As long as you make the character right , it will be the least of your issues.

I think I'm going to have to back out of this one guys. I've got too many other things going on at the moment but I'll stop by from time to time to see what fun you're all having :).
NOOO!!! Back to two :'(
Anyone else feel like getting into a game?
I think I could be. I've just dropped a couple of online games and I was thinking of looking for something else.
I've just read the intro on p1 of this thread. So what kind of characters are we looking at? Standard 3.5 non-humans? Anything else I've missed?
Not from what I can see. I am playing an Imp Rogue and Chrysalis is playing a Gnoll Ranger. You can be a human too if you want (I think).
Reading Book 1 right now in a different window ... I'll get back to you soon ...
So I'm tempted by a Lizardman character. Or perhaps an Orog, if I can find the creture profile for it!What do you think? Are you using Savage Species?...
Or maybe a halfling if that's all too complex.
humans are fine
6th level
no elves or dragons
every character must have a reason for being in jail
That's about it for restrictions
Keeper what class are you thinking of?
I could work with just three, so if no one else shows interest in the next few days I'll start it up with just you guys.
Having three actually makes it easier, as I'm running this campaign with my usual DnD croud, and I have a party of 3 so I can use the same opponents, and similar treasure.

c) the mansion of the local lord
d) the local temple
e) a street when a fight breaks out

b) anti-stereotypes
c) characters ripped from novels
d) psychopaths

A paladin?
a) obnoxious
b) stupid
A thief?
a) a merry, annoying gadabout
b) a kleptomaniac

a) an 'eccentric'
b) a pyromaniac

b) Jackie Chan
A barbarian?
a) The Hulk
b) Conan
A bard?
...
Who the hell plays bards?
A druid?
...
Why?
OK, so I did some reading last night, and if it is OK with Eyeolas, I'd like to play a Aasimar (Plantouched Celestial, Monster Manual I) Warlock (class from Complete Arcane). I would talk all six levels in the Warlock class.
Lots of reasons for a Assimar Warlock to be imprisoned by anyone, although just being weird and charismatic is probably enough, but taking out some of the guards that come to arrest this character would probably be added to the "charges".
I rolls some stats useing the d20 Dice Bag this morning (http://www.penpaperpixel.org/tools/d20dicebag.htm) and got the following stats from the rolls below: 13, 16, 17, 15, 18, 8
4d6+0
2,4,6,3+0 = 15
4d6+0
1,4,6,6+0 = 17
4d6+0
5,6,6,3+0 = 20
4d6+0
6,6,3,3+0 = 18
4d6+0
6,6,5,6+0 = 23
4d6+0
2,3,3,2+0 = 10
Can you let me know if this is OK so far, Eyeolas, and if it is, I'll proceed with the character creation.
Edit: Sorry, that would be taking all _five_ levels in Warlock, as Aasimar are LA+1. Ooops.
Rolls are fine, and so is the class/race. just make up a sheet in the next few days and we should be good to go this week end.

Well, you all picked intersting races (and very natural classes to reflect this), so yes, it will be interesting.
The one thing I'll have to enforce a bit more since you are all monsters, is if guards walkiing down the street see you, they will attack you alot more than my other party.
So what are the alignments going to be (we all know mine since he is a devil)?

So an devil imp, not a demon imp, right? I almost want to make a demonologist to keep trapping the imp with pacts and promises :p). In fact will there be an npc who owns the imp? I could see some amusing things happening from time to time.
A demonologist wouldn't do anything to a devil. Imps are devils. Some Mages use them as familiars but only when the devil chooses to.

The term is generic. Actualy I was more sort of supplying ideas for the GM to use :). Imps can be summoned away at the most awkward of times as well.

My Gnoll is going to be evil. I still wonder if he will be chaotic-evil or nasty-evil... :dragon:
And I considered playing a darkmantle (I love darkmantles, don't ask me why...), but I fear it would be hard to play among a party of humanoid characters :icon_scratch:
Darkmantles would be a bit iffy, I'd stick with the gnoll, it makes things simpler.
This imp has been imprissoned for two years, being tested on with all sorts of things (who's effects will become much more apparent later), if he was summoned, then he probably would have been summoned away by now by his owner.
I was thinking my Warlock would appear to be almost human, but not quite. I'll add a description as I roll up the character. I was thinking CG for alignment, but CN might be more appropriate (the bonkers alignment!), given what the others have said. I can't go for evil anything, though, as an Aasimar.
Any problems with a female character?

I don't know I am getting tired of everyone acting as if my character is someones pet so I am either switching it to a drow or just dropping out of this one.
Stick with the imp, Mike and then let the NPCs reap the consequences of underestimating you when you sneak attack their worthless hides. The other PCs will be pre-disposed to see him as a pet or familiar, but will perhaps grow to respect him when he opens a can of whup-ass in combat.

I don't think anyone's being malicious, it's just the imp as servant has a long-standing tradition in D&D - and 3E is all about breaking out of stereotypes, so embrace your imp-hood, and death to the naysayers! :dragon:
I just don't feel like dealing with it. I deal with enough close minded crud* in real life and don't need to deal with it when I am trying to relax. The point of the game is to have fund if I am already not and the game hasn't started then I will not be a part of it. It can still go on, just without me.
Yes Imps have been used as familiars throughout D&D. They have also been used as spies & assassins. they are devils after all. In most cases where they are familiars they are still actually spies for an arch devil.
A Drow could be good, if Eyeolas is OK, as it is a type of Elf. I don't have a problem with Imps, except when they're causing me pain. I think too many people see them as red goblins, when really they're very different to that!
Oh it would be sad if you were abandoning your Imp Custom Hobby! The idea of a Celestial having to break out of prison with a 7'65'' Gnoll and an evil Imp is really fun!
However, if you don't feel it, just have fun and do whatever you want...
..as long as you don't play a darkmantle. Those are for me! :icon_wink:
Females are fine, women can be in jail just as much as men.
if you really want to be a drow, go for it, whichever you think you'd enjoy more
lets get sheets in the Character sheet area people, once all three are there I'll start the first mission
Do you want to have the sheets posted in the character threads so of the way Balgin does them that way you can just go in and add effects as things change?
After your PM I will stick with the Imp and am posting him in the character threads.
That's great news, Mike! I'm quite excited to see how this plays out! :smalldiablo:
So am I. I am loking forward to playing the little guy.
I should have the Warlock's character sheet complete later this evening.
Sorry about the delay - I think you all know I find it difficult to get online at weekends. Still, I managed to finish my character, Stormy Annamaria Titus (http://www.customhobby.com/forum/index.php?topic=1334.0).
I've kept some detailed workings, if you want to see them, Eyeolas.
You loves yer crazy names, Dave! She sounds fun and er... exciting... :icon_ermm:
So are you joining the fun Fabian?
I'll sit this one out, thanks. You have a fun bunch of characters, though. :icon_thumleft:

Titus
As in Groan or as in Of Athens?
Neither. As in Andronicus. I think that
Eldritch Blast could be quite fearsome, when needed.
That's right, it's Timon of Athens isn't it?
Timon and Pumba of Athens - what happens when a cheeky meerkat and a flatulant warthog go to Greece? A whole lot of crazy adventures!
A bit too obtuse for me to fathom, then, Balgin :D
Lets say, Titus as in Stormy Titus! :icon_w00t: :icon_nutkick:
:Flamer:
Smiley alert! :abduct: gun7: gun3: :jerk:
Yeah, but sometimes you just need to express yourself in graphics form.
 is quite good for Stormy.
You just wanted an excuse to use the :jerk: smiley, didn't you, Fabian? ;)
I don't know what you're talking about...
:knob: :icon_mrgreen:
:lame: :tj:
Are we getting OT now, Fabian? :icon_scratch:

Nice character! I can see an interesting dynamic in this group :occasion14:
I've just realised that Weapon Finesse(ranged touch) is not a valid feat selection, as ranged touch attacks use DEX already, and not STR, so it can't be applied to this attack type. So I'm going to swap that out for Weapon Focus(ranged touch). I don't think this is a problem, is it, Eyeolas?
So we have all the characters I guess this game is ready to go. Now where is Eyeolas?
Are we having another player?
Are you wanting to run two characters, Chrysalis? :D

Uh? No! :dragon:
Does it mean it should begin soon?
I hope so :) Don't know where Eyelos has gone ...
Looking at the character sheets, it looks like Stormy is going to have to be the party communicator so that Sithrak and N'nyarok can talk to each other!
Won't everyone get Common for free - no shared language gets very old and tired as a story device.
I don't remember where I read it, but it was said that the gnoll language strangely sounded like a deformed elfic dialect...It would be easy to think that there are common roots :icon_w00t:
Delay! Sorry, life being a pain more than usual.
I'll get the first mission thread up tommorow at around 5ish (pm), which is the earliest I have time and access to my stuff.
No worries mate!
Oh and about communication my imp is a devil and they all have telepathy and can communicate with any intelligent creature.

Then we have a problem :icon_mrgreen:
